Women Only Climbing and Camping

Let’s have some fun climbing the ABC’s in the Castle Peak area. Over the weekend of March 15-17 we will climb Andesite, Basin and Castle Peak while winter camping in Castle meadow. We'll have a flexible schedule so come for one day or the whole weekend! Castle Peak is a great place to learn, practice and share climbing skills. There are no technical pre-requisites except willingness to have fun. We will be going over basic skills to get you confidently up a mountain. You should have appropriate gear. Please contact me if you need to obtain gear. No maximum. RSVPs open now.

How RSVPs work: Prospective members who have joined on Meetup but not yet paid for any membership may attend one event for free. Beyond this, you must be a current official SMG "MEMBER" to attend. All events open for RSVPs at 8:00pm on the Wednesday approximately three weeks prior. RSVPs are first-come first-served and are subject to event organizer review and final approval. All attendees must meet the pre-requisites. Prospective members will still need to sign the SMG Waiver / Assumption of Risk and provide emergency contact information to attend. Please provide the required information when you RSVP. Because this event occurs on public lands it is open to the public.

Not an official SMG member yet? Join the club here.

ITINERARY

Friday, March 15:

Meet up at the Roseville Eureka Park and Ride for carpooling, or you can meet us at the sno-park at the Castle Peak / Boreal exit off I-80. Please indicate on your RSVP. If you meet us at the sno-park, park as close to the Boreal Inn as you can. Each vehicle will need a sno-park pass. Passes can be purchased at Boreal Inn, or from REI.

We'll gather at the sno-park around 11:30 am to meet and greet, sort out gear and logistics, then make the one mile walk to the Castle Peak meadow. Snowshoes may be needed for this event, so bring them along. We'll set up camp in a prominent location just inside the trees on the northwest (left) side of the meadow near the stream. There we can construct a snow kitchen and head up the west ridge to look at the available routes for the weekend and take the short tour to Andesite Peak. Discussion of crampon, ice-axe and self-arrest technique will be discussed in camp the first day and demonstrated on the slopes of Castle Peak, about a 30-minute hike from camp. Have dinner and discuss routes nearby peaks and activities for the rest of the weekend.

If you plan on meeting us on Saturday or Sunday please indicate in RSVP and plan to meet us at the camp by 8:00 am. Based on experience, skills and route expectations we may split up into teams with a clear and concise goal. Routes to Castle Peak are the West Ridge and Southwest Slopes. Routes to Andesite Peak are the West Ridge or Andesite Ridge. Routes to Basin Peak are the West Ridge to North traverse or Round Valley. On Sunday we should be back at the sno-park no later than 4:00 pm. This will be a flexible group trip to meet the most important requirement – FUN.

Saturday March 16:

All meet in camp at 8:00 am whether you have stayed the night or are coming in that day. We may split into different teams based on ability, experience and route preference. Most likely take the Southwest slope to the summit block of Castle Peak. Options will be to ascend West Ridge. If time permits we can also traverse to Basin Peak and return to camp via Round Valley. Return to camp and have dinner. This will give us an excellent opportunity to discuss the climb and identify interests for Sundays climb.

Sunday March 17:

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day. Green eggs and ham for breakfast……..just kidding. I am Irish so I will be in a festive mood so make sure you wear something green. We will have many options on our last snow camp day. Everyone meet at camp at 8:00 am whether you have stayed the night or are coming in that day. We may split into different teams based on ability, experience and route preference. If we did not make the trip to Basin Peak already this would be a good day for it. We can discuss the night before and morning. Again, we can break into groups to satisfy everyone’s adventure objective. Andesite peak is also a good option as it is short with awesome views. Break camp and head back to the cars.

Snow shoes will be needed soake sure to bring some....I post holed on parts of the routes. The meadow also looked good. Those of you meeting us in camp go right in the valley. We will be in NW (to the left) section by the creek.

Hi there! I'm very excited to embark on this trip with all of you! I am new to SMG & mountaineering. I have backpacking gear, but no mountaineering gear. I do have a harness - I'm not sure if it's sufficient. In the "Gear" list, apart from the harness, I only have showshoes (nothing else on hand). Do I need to buy anything?

I'm flying in from Denver on Friday morning & will be picked up by Terrie.

    March 1, 2013

    • Cathy J.

Hi Robin - we will have helmets, ice axe, crampon loaner gear, so you do not have to buy anything. I am sure your harness will be fiine and we will have extras also. If you have carabiners (2 regular and 2 locking) bring those. It is going to be a fun trip and I am glad you are flying in for it. I can not wait to hear about Terrie's trip.

      March 1, 2013
