Mohonk - Bonticou Crag and Table Rocks!!

Here's a challenging hike for those desiring a little more than just a hike. Bonticou Crag is a rock scramble that was called Breakneck on Steroids. I did it in the winter with ice and Stabilicers on, it was one of the most challenging things I've done in a long time. I imagine without the ice and snow it will be better but maybe that's just wishful thinking. :-) HIKING BOOTS WITH GOOD TREAD ARE NECESSARY!!!!

Those that don't want to scramble will take the wonderful FLAT blue path around and meet us on the other side. NO DOGS ON THE SCRAMBLE.

You may want to join the Preserve as we will do several hikes at Mohonk this year. :-) For lots of info visit

Dress in (wicking) layers, bring water, hat, sunglasses, suntan lotion, bug stuff, bandana for sweat, first aid, LUNCH, tissues, and don't forget your camera. Hiking boots mandatory. Dress in layers, you will be exposed when on the rocks. If you have interesting health issues please let me know in advance. We live in tick country, you should ALWAYS do a thorough tick check after a hike or being outdoors.

Being properly prepared means being hydrated before and during the hike, drink plenty of water the day before and the morning of the hike. You MUST bring at least 2 liters of water.

We will likely dine afterwards in New Paltz and those enjoying a good shoe shopping side trip will want to join me at Pegasus after we eat. :-)

There is a $12 per PERSON fee. Parking is free but LIMITED!!!! We can carpool from New Paltz or Newburgh, or meet at the parking lot. Carpool would start at 8:15 in Newburgh in the Bed, Bath and Beyond parking lot at the Newburgh Mall. In New Paltz meet in the Park and Ride just past the New Paltz thruway tollbooth at 8:45, or 9:00 at the parking lot. Put 'carpool' in your RSVP and the location. Please don't be late, early is good!

Carpoolers please contribute to the gas and be on time as others are waiting for us. Please note the parking lot fills early on weekends, you may seriously want to carpool!!

Directions: Take the New Paltz exit 18 off of the NYS Thruway. Go west on Route 299 (through New Paltz), go over steel bridge and turn right onto Springtown Road. Make a left onto Mountain Rest Road. Pass the entrance to the Mohonk Mountain House and go under the one-lane bridge. Continue on 1 mile, and turn right on Upper 27 Knolls Road. Within ¼ mile, you’ll reach the kiosk for the Spring Farm Trailhead.

After the hike please DO NOT TOUCH THE GOOD TO SEE YOU BUTTONS!!! Check your computer before you leave if you have doubts about the weather. ALL HIKES ARE AT YOUR OWN RISK and you will need to sign a liability waiver to participate. Please send me your cell, I will return with mine. Please, no texts. $2 Meetup fee except if you are a new friend, your first event is free. :-) Happy day!!

This was one of those Just Plain Fabulous days.....a great hike, amazing views, and a wonderful group sharing lots of great conversations and laughs...the list goes on and on. I CAN'T WAIT to see the pictures, so many wonderful moments. :-) Thanks all who joined us. The Meetup fee today is going to our friends Starchild (David) and Earthgirl (Megumi) to help support their trek on the AT. Thanks for helping eat the rest of their care-package cookies!! Great meal afterwards at Barnaby's. Most excellent day. :-)

Sheryl, I want to bring my daughter Kristyn who is home from college. Can you tell the mileage, and the terrain, if she is not going to scramble but go the round about way.

Sheryl, Not sure If I am going to make this one. I am going to try my best to get there but I don't want anyone waiting on me. I am leaving for vacation on Monday and have a lot to get done in such a short time. I will do my best to make it.
