Harriman Mystery Hike!!

  • Apr 12, 2014 · 10:00 AM

Update!!! I will also plan a beginner component for our day as requested by some of our friends who don't want to do 5-7 miles. Our hike could turn into a 4-5 mile easier hike. I will also include a more strenuous longer hike if it is desired..... :-)

Here comes another Mystery Hike. It will start from our usual Elk Pen parking lot, but we will go exploring and do something different. So many trails, so few Saturdays!!!!

Plan on 5-7 MOVING miles at least, if the weather is great I'm going to want to keep going. We will go at a good pace, I'm not fast, but this is not for those who haven't been hiking regularly. It's been a long winter and I need to get OUT!!!! :-) Do join me if you have cabin fever and sad boots that need to be cheered up.

As this will be a discovery hike bring your sense of adventure along with your good supplies: Water, hiking boots, snacks or light lunch, camera, hat, sunglasses.......this is not a hike for beginners as I do not know what to expect. Harriman is generally harmless but you never know. I do not expect strenuous but again, if Sandi is reading the map we could end up in Kansas. :-) Map reading dogs welcome. :-)

Important note: Several years ago several cars were broken into at the Elk Pen parking lot. PLEASE leave all valuables at home, don't take any chances. Anyone who wishes to carpool, please make a note in your RSVP, we can carpool from Chicago Uno near the Thruway intersection of 32, in the Linen's N Things parking lot at 9:45 PROMPT, if you're late you'll be left behind. The carpool address is 20 Centre Drive, Central Valley, NY 10917. I will not put handbags in my trunk, please just bring your essentials and plan to carry them in your pack.

We will meet at a hikers parking lot, on Arden Valley Road just off Rt. 17 south of Arden at 10:00. It is on the right side about a half mile in off 17. There is a Hikers Crossing sign on 17, the Appalachian Trail crosses 17 and the thruway there. If you have hiking maps it is called Elk Pen. Here is a map for the parking area: http://mapq.st/13sL5Sd

The nearest address is 995 Arden House Rd, Tuxedo Park, NY 10987.

No Meetup fee if it's your first or you're a veteran in my groups (over 50 attended), everyone else is $2. We will dine afterwards, probably in Central Valley. Please send me your cell for last minute changes. DO NOT TEXT ME. I do not text. Horrible weather changes things so stay tuned. Cheers!!!

I really needed to get out and do a hike and this one was a great choice. Perfect weather and lots of UPS, followed by a delicious, and well earned lunch, shared with good friends. A very enjoyable day. Thanks Sheryl.

It was a great hike today, this is the start of my 4th year with the OCOS, I have come to meet so many new people that I now can call good friends an every outing there is new people to add to that list. Life is better because you are all in it.

A perfect early spring day, a great adventure nature mystery trail, a delicious meal with good friends, and as it that weren't enough, a back roads tour of Schunemunk and the railroad trestle thanks to Debbie and Dave. Thanks Sheryl for bringing us all together! :)

It was a great hike, something for all activity levels!! We had the walk/hike for those desiring that, the regular (6 mile?) moderate hike for 19 of us, and the extended day for those wishing for a bit more. The day was picture perfect, it was a great hike with a bunch of ups and downs, and one garter snake. I understand the walking group saw a bunch of wildlife including frogs!!! I'm jealous. We followed the hike with a great meal, yum. Thank you all for being part of a great day. See you soon!!!! :-)

GPS took me to a private drive up a deserted mountain pass. When I hit the gates, I had to turn around and go home. Hopefully, I'll see you guys at the Minnewaska hike, next week. Cheers!

Hello fellow hikers! I'm planning on doing a few extra miles on this hike. I'm going to get to the same trail head at 8am and follow the long path trail out as far as I can get in an hour and then return to meet the rest of the group at 10am. I will probably be moving at a 2 mi/hr pace so this might be about 4 miles extra. If anyone is interested in joining me, just let me know.

Hi Friends, This hike is at 10am, not 11am as the mobile devices may show!!! Yikes!!! Thanks Lori for bringing that to my attention. :-)

I figured out the problem. It was my phone. I didn't have the setting correct on syncing the date and time with my network provider. Probably no one else saw that error unless they made the same mistake!

      April 10, 2014

    • Sheryl

Thank goodness!!! Glad you found the problem. :-) If anyone is going to join Lori please post it so I know who to look for. We are likely to take the Appalachian Trail into Sterling Forest for our jaunt. :-)

For those that want an easier day there is a woods road that parallels the thruway and goes quite a distance. No hills or strenuous anything, like Stewart Buffer Lands....I'm aiming for 4-5 miles in the woods. Lori may do a longer hike if you wish to join her, so we can have 3 things going on!!

    April 10, 2014

  • Les

    I would like to carpool.

    April 9, 2014

  • Debi

Hope to make the hike if not dining, I will be returning from my Florida journey. I will try to pull the warmth north with me!
