Needs a location
Here's a daytime event for those who may have a day to play midweek.....Overlook Mountain up in Woodstock is a very cool place.
This is a cool 5 mile intermediate walk/hike. It has very cool features, the old Overlook Mountain House ruins, a great fire tower, a really nice view point for a snack and a sit. We will likely wander around Woodstock afterwards and enjoy a nice meal and well-deserved beverages.
Many people would rate it fine for beginners but I hesitate because of the distance, the steepness, the loose gravel walking on the steep descent, so I am rating it moderate. It is mostly up for the first half, then mostly down for the return trip. There is one really cool turtle cairn but if you blink you will miss it. :-)
Carpool recommended. Meet at Newburgh Bed Bath and Beyond (Rt. 300, next to the Newburgh Mall) at 10am, or the trailhead at 11am. Put CARPOOL in your RSVP if you are joining us. We can stop at the New Paltz Park and Ride if you put NP CARPOOL in your RSVP or we won't stop, roughly 10:20.
The lot isn't huge and parking could be a problem if it's a gorgeous weekend. This is roughly a 3 hour event for the hiking part, views and snacks are extra.
Hiking boots, WATER, light lunch or heavy snacks, hat, wicking clothing, suntan lotion, bug stuff, tissues, EXTRA WATER, camera, all good stuff. Clothing should be NO COTTON, sweaty clothing looks miserable and doesn't dry ever.... :-). Please bring basic first aid, including moleskin for blisters!!! :-)
It is 2 1/2 miles from the center of Woodstock. Take Rt. 28 from Kingston to Rt. 375 to Rt. 212 in Woodstock. Make a left onto 212 to the heart of Woodstock near the municipal lot. Where the road bends in the center of Woodstock take 33 to the right. Go straight across another 33 (Glasco Tpk.) on your original 33, Meads Mountain Rd. Wiggle your way up to the top of the hill, the parking lot is on your right, you won't miss it. It is across from a Buddhist Monastery.
As always, there is the chance that we may get lost, my distance estimate may be off, a wild animal may eat the map, trails can be closed, people get hurt and we have to change plans, bridges wash away, any number of peculiar things may happen. If you can't roll with the punches please don't join us. In my opinion, if you are with friends, the day is golden whatever happens!!!
$2 Meetup fee. Miserable weather postpones. Light rain doesn't necessarily cancel, stay tuned. Please send me your cell phone, I will return with mine. Woodstock reception is questionable, FYI. Please DO NOT TEXT ME, pick up the phone or email me ahead of time. Dogs welcome.
All hikes are at your own risk and you will need to sign a liability waiver to participate. Please check your email before the hike if weather is questionable. Cheers!!!
$2 Meetup fee unless it's your first or a veteran with me (over 50 events). Please send me your cell, I'll return with mine, please NO TEXTS. Bad weather makes the hotel spooky and wonderful for pictures, check back a few years for the pix, it was so cool....Sept. 8, 2012. Happy Trails!!
