Labor Day Weekend GN Hike!! :-)

Let's celebrate Labor Day Weekend with a Gertrude's Nose hike. I'm considering changing the group name to the Gertrude's Nose Hikers....just kidding, but OK, maybe not.... :-)

This 9 (?) mile hike has the most excellent views of all of our hikes. The rocks are just SOOOOOO cool, I can't get enough. Experienced hikers welcome, please no beginners. We will dine in New Paltz afterwards, location TBD.

Lake Minnewaska is a wonderful place to share with friends, and Gertrude's Nose is an AMAZING hike. This will be on carriage roads and on nice hiking trails, 9 miles, TONS of views and great places. It's roughly 20% on carriage roads, 80% on hiking trails.

This is not a hike for beginners. This is an intermediate hike with a difficulty level of strenuous. There are no horrible ups or downs but rock scrambling and narrow ledges/rock crevices could be an issue if you are not comfortable with these or are scared of heights.

NEW: I don't mind opening this also up to those that might want to just do the carriage roads, that is PLAN B. You will be on your own, but you will NOT get lost. You can go as far as you want, and hang out when you are done or walk around New Paltz while you wait for us to finish. We are going to be a while. :-)

Hiking in hot weather dictates that you MUST hydrate before the hike and bring LOTS of water. Drink extra the day before and bring more water than you think you will need. A nifty Frogg Toggs cooling towel will be your friend, or a wet face cloth in a ziplock bag.

Dress in layers, bring water, hat, sunglasses, first aid, bug stuff, tissues, and don't forget your camera. Hiking boots mandatory.

Dogs are welcome. They must be leashed at Minnewaska (park rules). Please consider the hot car afterwards, bring water and you may want to skip the dining part.

CARPOOL INFO: There is a $8 per car fee for parking. We can carpool from Newburgh, or meet at the upper parking lot of Minnewaska. For friends who are close to Minnewaska we can also collect you from the large lot opposite the Mountain Brauhaus restaurant at the intersection of 299 and 44/55 before you start up the mountain. Carpool would begin (leave at) at 8:40 in Newburgh in the Bed, Bath and Beyond parking lot at the Newburgh Mall. or 9:15 at Mt. Brauhaus, or 9:30 at Minnewaska. Put 'carpool' in your RSVP and the location.....Please don't be late, early is good!

Meet at the upper top parking lot. Go straight and UP when you go in the gate. Carpoolers please split the parking fee and contribute to the gas. If it's a gorgeous day parking could be an issue and we may get separated if you are not with the carpoolers. Cell service is tricky up there.

After the hike please DO NOT TOUCH THE GOOD TO SEE YOU BUTTONS!!! Bad weather changes things. Check your computer before you leave if you have doubts about the weather. ALL HIKES ARE AT YOUR OWN RISK and you will need to sign a liability waiver to participate. Please send me your cell, I will return with mine. Please, no texts. $2 Meetup fee except if you are a new friend or over 50 events with me, your adventure is free. :-) Happy day!!

Thanks to Wally and Louise for pinch hitting for Sheryl and great to see Sheryl for Wally's Wail. Also grateful to learn the difference between a Yankee and Damned Yankee - useful information!

So there was actually a Plan C that nobody knew about, get to sleep 3 extra hours and do Wailing Whoevers Way twice.....it worked for me!! It was awesome seeing you guys today, the hugs are like medicine if you're not feeling well, and Charlie, GOOD TO SEE YOU!!!! I knew I had to get out of bed for a very good reason today, and it wasn't the feathers or the tiny animal skull. :-) Nice meal afterwards at Bacchus, thank you all for making it a great day after all. :-) Hugs to those I missed!!!!

I can take people from Brauhaus, have the pass. But am planning on being back at my car at 3:30, might have to cut the hike a little short. (skip Wallys Wail again!)

May I join your carpool too? Skipping Wally's Wail fine by me too.

I really want to try this hike but the heights thing makes me hesitate. How far into the hike would I have to worry about that? I wouldn't mind going with you all and then turning around and going back on my own if I didn't think I could handle the ledge part, but if that happens close to the start of the hike there'd be no point.

    • Sheryl

Check out pictures of previous GN hikes, that'll give you a good idea of what is involved. It's not so much heights but the edges of the flat rocky paths we wander. It is easy to stay away from them. :-)

Ha! The photos made my throat dry and I could feel my vertigo kicking in. Thanks for the suggestion to look... I think this one isn't for me =)

I would love, love, love to do this one but know its too strenuous for me at this time. Are there others who would like to go, are light-hikers, and would sign on for 'Plan B'? Carpool, share gas costs, and hang out in New Paltz are all appealing. I'm good for meeting at Bed-Bath in Newburgh, then going from there. Any takers?
