Valles Caldera Sleigh Ride- Hay Ride

Please read the entire post before RSVP-ing. Thank you! The following is the description as presented on the Valles Caldera site. www.vallescaldera.gov "Visit the Valles Caldera National Preserve at a gentle speed, from a horse-drawn wagon or sleigh. Sleigh rides become wagon rides if there is not enough snow along the route. The horse-drawn ride will take about 60 minutes. At a pleasant pace, matched draft horses take you through the historical headquarters area along the edge the Valle Grande. From aboard, you will experience the elements, the solitude of winter, and possibly the wildlife of the Preserve. A guide will show how humans and wildlife have withstood the rigors of winter and how sleds and wagons were once a means of survival. Winter temperatures at the Preserve can be extreme, often 20 degrees colder than the Albuquerque area. Please dress in winter gear to make your ride more comfortable by bringing wool hats and gloves, extra blankets, and sunglasses. The Preserve will provide some blankets, but feel free to bring your own." As of today, there are 12 spots available. You will need to go to their Internet site and reserve your space. The cost might seem a bit pricey but well worth it since its so much fun! Adult $30.00 Senior (62+) $24.00 Youths (under 15) $24.00 Kids (Under 4) Free. Please note, "Only four-wheel drive or vehicles equipped with chains are recommended to enter the Preserve in snowy weather. Our north-facing road is plowed and snow-packed and can often be icy. Be prepared for winter driving conditions and have extra food, water, blankets and ample gas in your vehicle’s tank. In case of a white-out, stay with your car." Looks like we might need to use 4x4's so if anyone with snow able vehicles are coming, we sure would appreciate it if you would drive. Of course the customary 10cents a mile per passenger will be requested as reimbursement to the driver for gas, car maintenance and appreciation/courtesy.

Right now there are 12 spaces available on the Valles Caldera website. They would not allow me to reserve all 12 without paying for them all so you will need to make your own reservation as soon as possible. I hope we can fill up the ride with 12 from our group. You will need to login, go to the calendar, click on 2/2, then click on the 11:00 am sleigh ride to make your own reservation. The ranger said they would allow our members to register as Seniors in order to get the discount even if some of us are under 62. Feel free to take a guest or two.... Grandkid are very welcome as are family and friends! Regular prices will apply to them. Those wishing to snowshoe or cross country ski after the horse drawn ride, can do so at the senior rate of $8. (I tried to negotiate a package deal but no go... Sorry)

If anyone has ski gloves to loan, can you bring them tomorrow? I am going to buy some, but they would only be used for our trip (I have a pair at home in CA). I have medium sized hands. Thanks for considering.

Hi everyone... Our sleigh/wagon ride is tomorrow! Hurray! Let's plan on leaving the Goodwill parking lot on time since some of us are going to need to stop at the Jemez Springs Bath House on the way up to drop off a car and our "stuff". It won't take but a minute! Also, Valles Caldera would like us to be at the visitor's center by 10:45. Please remember to bring cash to reimburse your drive 10 cents a mile for their gas and hospitality. It's pretty chilly on the sleigh/wagon so dress warmly and maybe bring a blanket. I'll bring a few fleece throws to share. Can't wait to see you all!

FYI and anyone else heading to Valles Caldera.....I'm planning on bringing a small camp stove for lunchtime. We should be able to do tea, hot chocolate, and heat water for Ramen or whaterever else needs hot water. Will only have 1 pan for water
so that leaves out cans of chili, Dinty Moore stew, Chef Boyardee ravioli, Green Giant corn, refried beans, etc.......LOL I'll bring cups, chocolate, and ass't tea.

What a lovely idea, Frank! Thanks for offering the winter ambiance!

Thanks for the reminder, Michele. As for the bath house reservation, you can have one of the 4 I reserved for 3:00 if that works for you.

Darlene, do you still have an unused rez for the bath house? If yes, may I use one of them?

      January 28, 2013

    • Darlene

Yes ma'am! It's yours. We have 4 @ 3:00. Michele and Frank have one too. Anyone else will be able to make a reservation by calling them directly. Phone number is below.

  • Darlene

Well, looks like we've had quite a bit of communication and clarification of needs and preferences regarding Saturday. Great! Here's what I have thus far.... Please correct me if I'm wrong.
    4x4's:
    Mariski & Carol + 2
    Sandy & granddaughter + 2
    Frank, Marsha, Michele & Darlene
Gayle + 3 but leaving from SF

Looks like we have rides for everyone.

    January 28, 2013

    • Darlene

I'm going to suggest that Marsha, Michelle and I ride with Frank since we are going to the bath house after. There are 4 reservations for 3:00 and these people were the first to contact me about wanting those spots.
If anyone else would like to go the the bath house, please call to reserve your time. I'm not sure what's available right now but I hope you can get a reservation!
Gayle is coming from SF if anyone wants to drive up to go with her.
One last thing... For now! :-)
Let's all remember to bring cash to reimburse our driver 10 cents a mile for the gas, car maintenance, and gratitude for driving.
      Thanks!

      January 28, 2013

    • Darlene

Sheryl there is room for you with Sandy or Mariski. If Frank doesn't have room for 3 riders, then one of us can ride with someone else. We can figure this out!

Sadly, Ann will not be able to attend and I will be taking her place. I'm a Californian with a 2 wheel drive with no business (apparently) driving to Valles Caldera. Can I hitch a ride with someone? I'm flexible with the time departure (can wait for skiers, can participate
in the hot springs, can go home immediately, wherever I fit in...) that said, I am BEYOND thrilled to be able to attend this!

Frank, may I catch a ride with you and Darlene?

      January 28, 2013

  • Michele

As I had mentioned before, I have an all-wheel drive but am a bit of a nervous driver in snow ( after an accident...) so would prefer not to drive but if I am all you have, I'd have to volunteer myself!
I want to snow shoe and also have a spare pair I can bring for someone. Soak sounds great too. Should I ring them??

Michele, has anyone taken you up on borrowing your extra set of snow shoes? If not, may I borrow them?

      January 28, 2013

  • mariski

Here is my story: I am driving. I am taking my skiis and snowshoes. What I do after the sleigh ride will depend on the weather and the snow conditions. I am not planning on stopping at the Hot Springs. I do plan on being home no later that 6PM. So any extra activity will be for a short time. Two people have contacted me for a ride but they didn't have this information so they may change their minds after reading this. S & C let me know if you are still interested in a ride.

    January 27, 2013

    • Carol

I'm not snowshoeing or skiing. It sounds like everyone has plans to do something afterward so I can always bring a book or take a nap. If that works for you Marilyn, then I will ride with you. I will be sure to bring a pillow and blankie. I would consider a soak but I am doing one on Thursday.

      January 27, 2013

575)[masked] is the number for the bath house. I did snag 4 soak/wrap spots for 3:00 so if you'd like one, let me know. As of today, there were several available at 4:00 if anyone else is interested. Since Sandy might not be staying for snowshoeing and the bath house, I'd like to ride with you Frank. Thank you. Sandy, perhaps Sheryl can ride with you since she isn't planning to stay for snowshoeing. ???

    January 26, 2013

  • Frank

Ride @ 10:00 - 2 hours??? Some lunch and a couple of hours of snow time should allow time to get to the springs @ 3:00
No smoking and no pets have been in this car of mine.
Think significant SNOW, all you winter aficionados and aficionadas!!!

Frank wrote and said..."Here's what I can provide -- 4WD for 2 riders, staying for Xcntry skiing, and the Jemez hot springs afterward sounds muy bueno. Time for skiing/snow play somewhat flexible." Thanks Frank. I might take one of those 2 seats if the allergy thing can work. I'd like to snowshoe and stop at the bath house on the return. Lets all remember that you will need to reserve a head of time at the bath house.

    January 26, 2013

  • Sheryl

I too will be needing a ride with someone with a four wheel drive. I was not planning on staying for snow shoeing. Thanks

    January 26, 2013

  • Carol

I would like to ride with anyone who has a 4 wheel drive. My car is only a front wheel drive. Thanks

    January 26, 2013
