This will not be a race to the top! It will be a slow and easy trip with many rest stops. Meet in the parking lot at the base of the Sandia Tram at 7:15 AM. Please be on time as we will leave promptly at 7:30!
We will divide the group into two - Tom will lead those that want to start out at the Tram for the longer hike (9 1/2 miles) and those that want to hike the shorter version will carpool to the LaLuz Trailhead with Melissa (8 miles.) Please indicate your preference when you sign up. Someone will bring us back to our cars when the day is done.
Longer Version: We’ll take the Tramway Trail north (steady 2.6 miles climb) until it joins the La Luz Trail. From there we will take the remaining 6.5 miles (moderate - difficult) to the Sandia Tram terminal and restaurant.
Both groups will meetup at the 3 mile medallion tree resting spot.
Frequent stops for energy boost, sight seeing, and picture taking will be encouraged. With the changing colors of the trees, the beauty of the canyon should prove to be spectacular.
Reward: As a reward for making it to the top, we will spend an hour or so having lunch (greenchile cheeseburger and a drink - Tom's favorite) at the restaurant and enjoy the view before returning on the Tram.
Time: Plan on taking 5 – 5 1/2 hours to get to the top. We should return to the cars by 2:30 – 3 PM.
Leaders: Tom Mizner (cell #[masked]) Melissa [masked])
What to Bring: $12.00 for your tram ticket, plenty of water, (at least 2 liters) high-energy type snack foods, sunscreen, layers of clothing, camera, and money for lunch. Hiking Poles are Strongly Encouraged.
Fitness Level: Moderate + - Even though this will not be a race to the top, please know that it will be a strenuous day - we have 20 switchbacks full of rocks to cross (yes, I count them every time I do this hike) and an elevation gain of 3,775 and a grade of 12% (Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Luz_Trail)
