fashion & beauty: second-hand is the new black (or how to op-shop for clothes)

  • to
  • Salvation Army

cnr Ghuznee & Taranaki streets, Wellington (map)

    -41.295490 174.777115

  • what we are doing

Never tried op-shopping because you think you'll look fly-blown and scruffy not to mention out of fashion? Well think again!

Op-shopping is a creative and sustainable way to bolster your wardrobe regardless of your style. You can stop buying only new stuff (sometimes made in highly dodgy work environments overseas) just to watch it fall apart! Take a look around at the quality, unique, one-off, retro, 'statement', even designer items available in our op-shops.

We will be using the shops as our classroom!

Meet at the Salvation Army cnr Taranaki and Ghuznee Streets.

From the Sallies we will walk to the Recycle Boutique, then take in the ‘up market’ Cuba Street second hand boutiques.

Then we’ll drive to Newtown (in own car, or come with me - I can fit 4 others in mine) where we will check out St Vincent De Paul, Opportunity for Animals, and the Salvation Army there.

In each shop (where reasonable and practical on the day), we will be introduced by staff to the philosophy of their shop as well as any other interesting sales and historical info.

    what you will learn

    • how to recognise special pieces when you walk near them.
    • how to mix old and new - or go boldly vintage from head to toe!
    • how to dress for your body type, skin tone, and personality
    • to enlighten your sense of fashion to include what ultimately suits you - not what's in the chain stores this season! Way more cool that way...

You’ll also learn which shops are charity-run organisations and how the charities spend the money they earn.

So come along and find out how to look really good for little money while helping make the world a healthier, more interesting and less crap-centric place.

Thanks Alicia, thats a pity, but theres plenty of other '2nd hand' places to meet if the Sallies are closing. I'll find out whats happening and post any change of venue on this meetup asap. : )

I'm pretty sure the Sally's on Taranaki is closing... I was just there the other day and they were pretty cleared out.
