performance & music: spoken word (introduction)

what we are doing
* Provide a brief introduction to and history of spoken word/performance poetry
* Explanation of spoken word vs poetry slam
* Perform a couple of poems as examples to stimulate conversation and demonstrate various techniques
* Ask group members who are willing to share a poem that they would like to learn to perform
* Seek feedback from the group and myself as to how the techniques we have talked about could be applied to the poem
* Discussion of memorizing techinques
* Briefly talk about the spoken word opportunities in Wellington and around NZ if people are interested in learning more.

what you will learn

* What spoken word/performance poetry is, how it came about and how it has taken over the world!
* How a poetry slam works (spoken word/performance poetry competition)
* Confidence in performing poetry out loud as opposed to just reading it.
* How to vary volume, pace and tone to create different moods throughout the poem
* How body language, actions and facial expression can be used to enhance performance.
* What is happening in Wellington and the rest of NZ and how you can become involved.

While my name is Alina Siegfried, I write and perform poetry under the name of Ali Jacs - so this is the name I would use. STOP PRESS: Ali Jacs was just announced the new 2012 National Poetry Slam champion! WOHOOOO!

I have been involved in performance poetry and spoken word for two and a half years, initially starting out in Canada. For the past two years I have been a finalist in the NZ National Poetry Slam, placing second in 2011, and subsequently competing in a Trans-Tasman Slam in Melbourne in April this year. I started the monthly Wellington performance poetry series Poetry in Motion this year, which has been a great success and has outgrown it's original venue of the courtyard of Heaven Pizza (where the workshop will be held).

cost 15 (includes a small pizza from Heaven Pizza) and remaining proceeds will be donated to Poetry in Motion - the monthly spoken word event which Alina host.

    Oh noo! Can't make it, just got signed on to a shift for tonight. Any way I can get a copy of your notes or if you've got any websites you think might help tickle my fancy? I'm terribly interested! :/ Sorry to bum out on you, I might try to send someone your way if I can find someone to fill my spot!
