Re: [skeptics-137] Colo. town turns toilet water into drinking water

Yep. Federal funding has been a great help in modernizing infrastructure, and water treatment technology has certainly come a long way.  Reverse osmosis, desalination, membrane technology, it's all good.  Courtesy of science.

One thing I find particularly interesting is this cycle of becoming aware of a problem or threat (inevitable depletion of fossil fuels, for example) followed by research and development of technology to lessen the threat or avoid catastrophe (e.g. hydraulic fracturing was developed by our government as a means of releasing trapped oil and gas, and the technology was handed over to private companies for commercialization) followed by yet another problem (depletion of clean water sources, in part because of the 6-10 million gallons needed for every frack) followed by research and development of technology to lessen the threat or avoid catastrophe (the aforementioned water recycling technologies), and it goes on and on.

For me there is an element of suspense.  Is it actually a cycle, or more like a descending spiral?  How long can we continue the pattern?  I tend to think that science + optimism + funding offers our best chance.
