Fwd: Tell Gov. Brownback: Stop refusing federal funding for healthcare

Fellow liberals, here is a chance to sign a Medicaid petition intended for Gov Brownback.  For any state to refuse Medicaid funding from the federal government is simply insane as it would both help those who are too poor to afford health insurance and give the state economy a boost.

The petition below was started by Claudean McKellips, a CREDO activist in Lawrence, Kansas. Claudeen started a petition on CREDO Mobilize, where activists can launch their own campaigns for progressive change. Will you help Claudeen pressure Governor Brownback and Republicans in the state legislature to stop blocking the expansion of Medicaid in Kansas by signing the petition and sharing it with your friends and family?

Dear ERIC,

On January 1, millions of Americans whose income is less than 133% of the poverty level will become eligible for Medicaid. But because Governor Brownback and Republicans in the Kansas legislature are playing politics with healthcare and refusing federal funding, Kansas residents won't be eligible.

This is a craven attempt to undermine President Obama's Affordable Care Act at the expense of Kansas residents and we need to push back now.

CREDO activist Claudean McKellips started a campaign on, which allows activists to start their own petitions. The petition, which is to Governor Brownback and Republicans in the Kansas legislature, asks the following:

Denying federally funded health insurance to Kansas residents in need is unconscionable. Stop playing games with the health of your constituents and take immediate steps to accept Medicaid expansion funding under the Affordable Care Act.

Tell Governor Brownback and Kansas Republicans: Expand Medicaid now.

According to the Urban Institute, in Kansas alone there are 103,000 people who would soon be receiving free healthcare coverage under Medicaid if Republicans weren't blocking its expansion under the Affordable Care Act.

And refusing to accept Medicaid funding from the federal government isn’t just bad for Kansas residents, it is also bad for the state’s finances. According to a study released on December 5 by the Commonwealth Fund, Governor Brownback and Republicans in the state legislature are costing Kansas an estimated $950 million in federal funding per year starting in 2022.

Republican governors are vulnerable on this issue. Across the country, they are coming under heavy scrutiny for playing games with their constituents’ healthcare and blocking their access to federally funded Medicaid.

With the Affordable Care Act’s Medicaid expansion set to go into effect on January 1, now is the perfect time to ramp up grassroots pressure on Governor Brownback and other Republicans in Kansas to provide their constituents with the healthcare coverage they deserve.

Will you join Claudeen and urge Republicans in Kansas to accept federal funds for expanding Medicaid now by signing the petition?

Thank you for your support.
