Bakersfield Area Skeptics Society Monthly Meetup

Richard Collins, Ph.D., and Gary Enns, of the Zen Fellowship of Bakersfield, will speak about science and Buddhism.

Dr. Collins, is the founding Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities at CSUB.  Dr. Collins began Zen practice at the New Orleans Zen Temple with Robert Livingston Roshi, in the lineage of Taisen Deshimaru and Kodo Sawaki. He has published poetry, fiction, and essays on Zen and edited several, including Mushotoku Mind: The Heart of the Heart Sutra by Taisen Deshimaru (Hohm Press, 2012). His upcoming book is entitled “Without Benefit of Words: Zen Talks and Writings” (Hohm Press, forthcoming 2015). He received bodhisattva (or lay) ordination in 2001, monastic ordination in 2010, and received permission to teach in 2012. He founded the Zen Fellowship of Alexandria in Louisiana and the Zen Fellowship of Bakersfield, which meets every Saturday morning and holds occasional sesshin or retreats, the next one being on May 10 at the Ablin House.

    I enjoyed the informal presentation and discussion. Although I am not very familiar with Zen, I now better understand it as a discipline based on ritual and practice. Many thanks to Dr. Collins and Mr. Enns for sharing their knowledge of Zen with skeptics like us.
