• Sketch Madison Square Park and the Flatiron!

    Flatiron Building

One of the most beautiful spots in the city and one of the places that made me first fall in love with the city when I first moved here. We'll meet in the plaza north of the Flatiron building, draw there, and then move into the park near the fountain, too. And then maybe we can get some Shake Shack afterwards if the line isn't insane. Oh man, their chicken sandwich is so good. Any problems on the day of the event, I can be reached at[masked]. Looking forward to sketching with you! ---------- IMPORTANT: In case of rain, I will let people know early in the morning if it is canceled, and then reschedule for another day. ---------- What makes our Meetups different from other art groups and classes? There's no instruction, but we like to share our work, and chat and be inspired. Share tips and learn from people in a casual environment where all levels of artists are welcome! Don't be shy to ask anyone anything! • We sketch for a bit, usually 45 minutes or so, and then get back together and share our drawings, and then sketch again, etc. There's usually time for 3 or 4 sketches. • Please bring your own supplies - anything you like to work with - pens, pencil, watercolor, pastel, small sketchbook or large paper, iPad, whatever suits you. • We hand out nametags so everyone can meet one another! • We take photos to share on the site later. Take a bunch! • Sorry, but please leave the dogs at home; they tend to step on the artwork. Thanks. • This Meetup is FREE and everyone at all skill levels is welcome! ---------- Please note that if you add a comment below it will spam everyone with an email, so please use your judgement.

  • Sketch the Elizabeth Street Sculpture Garden!

    Elizabeth Street Garden

Tucked away in SoHo/Nolita is a hidden gem - a beautiful sculpture garden with all sorts of diverse art and plants and structures. Let's meet there and sketch! We'll meet up at the entrance on Elizabeth Street, between Prince and Spring. You can't miss it. The Garden is actually just about the only green park space throughout the whole area. But what's a shame is that the city is working to replace it with new fancy-schmancy apartments. This event is free, but while we're there, if you want to donate to support the park (their legal fees fighting the development), I'm sure they would greatly appreciate it. Likewise with signing their petition, and even by promoting this event and posting photos, etc. You can learn more here: https://www.elizabethstreetgarden.com/ . Again, that part is all totally optional. ---------- Any problems on the day of the event, I can be reached at[masked]. • Sketch each other's portraits in Central Park!

    5th Avenue & East 79th Street

One of our favorite event types is drawing each other! Portrait practice is super important for artists, but we don't often get to do it live. Here, we'll partner up or work in small groups as one person sits still and the other draws. The focus is on faces. If you're shy, you don't have to pose, but it's encouraged. This is also one of the best events for meeting other people - in a super relaxed and no-pressure way. Where are we meeting this time? At the (not very) famous King Jagiello statue in Central Park! It's a nice spot next to the pond. Don't know where that is? Neither does anyone else! We'll meet outside the park at 5th Ave and 79th Street (just south of the Met) and walk in together. Any problems on the day of the event, text or call[masked]. Looking forward to sketching with you! ---------- IMPORTANT: In case of rain, I will let people know early in the morning if it is canceled, and then reschedule for another day. ---------- What makes our Meetups different from other art groups and classes? • Sketch sunset at the new Domino Park!!

    Domino Park

Have you visited the new Domino Park? So many things to sketch: half in the park itself, with cool structures and water features, and half the amazing skyline view. Come to this evening event and we can try to catch a great sunset over the river and bridges. We'll meet at the NORTH entrance of the park on River Street at the end of Grand Street (in Brooklyn!) Any problems on the day of the event, text or call[masked]. • Sketch the Brooklyn Botanic Garden!

    Brooklyn Botanical Garden

It's been years since we went to the gorgeous Botanic (no "al") Garden in Brooklyn. This event will be on a Sunday, at 11:00. Please be punctual! When you arrive, buy your ticket and then meet us right after you enter and your ticket is taken. Then we'll walk into the park together to a good sketching spot. • Sketch the High Seas on a real historic ship and museum!

    South Street Seaport Museum

We've sketched in the South Street Seaport Museum before, but then it was devastated by Hurricane Sandy. There are still a few exhibits, so we can sketch there, but the highlight of the collection is the REAL GIANT HISTORIC SHIP they have - which we can sketch on! (Weather permitting.) Come bring your sketchpad and shoulder parrot and join us! We'll meet at the entrance to the museum at 12 Fulton Street. (Closest subway is the Fulton Street Station, which features the not-confusing-at-all hub of the A, C, J, Z, 2, 3, 4 & 5 trains.) The Museum charges $12 for adults and $8 for students and seniors. Please purchase your ticket when you arrive! ---------- Any problems on the day of the event, I can be reached at[masked]. • Draw from the American Watercolor Society Exhibition!

NOTE THE TIME OF 1:00 PM! The beautiful Salmagundi Club has lots of exhibits all year-round. Currently the 152nd(!) Annual American Watercolor Society Exhibition is up and it looks stunning. The 20th is the next-to-last day to see it. Can't wait! We'll meet outside the Club at 1:00pm and then go in together. It's at 47 Fifth Avenue (at 12th Street). We'll sketch this show and perhaps other parts of the Club as well. Even the building itself is stunning. A sketchpad and pencil/pen are best to bring. Don't be intimidated by the title of the event ... you're NOT required to sketch in watercolor! THIS MEETUP IS FREE! Any problems on the day of the event, I can be reached at[masked]. • Delve into the 2nd Ave Subway for portrait and figure sketching!

It's been a year and a half since we sketched the new subway art here, and while there are other stations I love too (like the new 28th 6 stop), these are less crowded, clean, and have LOTS of subjects to draw. We'll first MEET INSIDE THE 86TH STREET Q STATION. Pay and go inside the station and find us in the middle of the upper mezzanine (not the tracks). This station has huge tiled Chuck Close portraits that we can draw. We'll do one sketch, take a look at the art together (no critique or identification, just appreciation), and then take the subway one stop down to the 72 street station and hopefully do 2 sketch periods there. If you've been here, the realistic tile figures in this station have to be seen to be believed. It might be the closest you'll ever get to having average New Yorkers posing to draw for free. THIS MEETUP IS FREE EXCEPT FOR 1 SUBWAY FARE! ---------- Any problems on the day of the event, I can be reached at[masked]. Looking forward to sketching with you! ---------- What makes our Meetups different from other art groups and classes? There's no instruction, but we like to share our work, and chat and be inspired. • Sketch the International Center of Photography!

    International Center of Photography Museum

PLEASE NOTE THE DATE CHANGE! AND PLEASE BUY YOUR TICKET FROM ME (see below). This will be our first time sketching at the International Center of Photography, and I'm excited! I thought of it recently when I was reading about the For Freedoms exhibit, which sounds amazing. There's also a portraiture exhibit at the same time. PLEASE SEE ME BEFORE BUYING A TICKET! I had to pay (in full) in advance for the group, so please see me when you arrive and be prepared to pay me $12 in cash per person. If you are late, or we surpass the number of reservations I arranged, then you can just buy your own ticket and join the group inside. The museum is located at 250 Bowery, just south of Houston. Nearby subways are the 6, NQRW, and BDFM. ---------- Any problems on the day of the event, I can be reached at[masked]. • Sketch the Museum of Food & Drink!

Museum of Food and Drink (MOFAD) Lab

PLEASE NOTE TIME of 3PM! And PRE-BUY TICKETS if you can. (see below) The Museum of Food & Drink is relatively new, existing in temporary forms and opening this "Lab" space in 2015. It's at 62 Bayard Street in Williamsburg. The current exhibit is "Chow: Making the Chinese American Restaurant" and it looks like there will be lots of interesting things to draw. It's a bit of an experiment for the group - a later time than normal (3pm), most likely a shorter event, and a new location. But let's be adventurous! REGULAR TICKETS are $14 ($10 for students/seniors). This is all that's needed for the sketch event. ... However, if you wish, you can pay for Special Admission, which also includes a full meal ($25 or $20 for students/seniors). The museum has limited space. You can buy tickets at the door, but there's a chance you may have to wait. To guarantee entry, buy tickets early online at https://mofad.secure.force.com/ticket/#sections_a0F[masked]ArAwrEAF . Please note that the L train is not running on weekends right now. Yeah, tell me about it. ---------- Any problems on the day of the event, I can be reached at[masked].
