August 2013 meeting -- Tokyo Socrates Cafe

The topic for this month is: Should monarchy be abolished?

With the births of Prince George and Prince Hisahito, the world's two largest monarchies have recently seen the emergence of a new generation of heirs. We'd like to discuss the value of monarchy in modern society, and whether the institution ought to be preserved.

For background on this issue, you may wish to read "Why does the UK love the monarchy?" by Mark Easton at the BBC, and a similar article about Japan by journalist David McNeill.

A special note for this month: Martin and Tyson will be coordinating a second group for those that on the RSVP waiting list. It will be at the same time but a different place, and we'll all meet together at Failte afteward. Please see the message board for details.

As always:

1) We will hold the discussion at Gonpachi from 3:00pm to 5:00pm, then move to Failte for more open discussion afterward.
2) If this is your first time joining us, please note that Meetup's map for Gonpachi is incorrect! The correct location can be seen here on Google Maps. Also, information about Failte can be found at their webpage.
3) Though there is no charge for the meetup, please order at least a drink or a snack at Gonpachi as they have been kind enough to allow us to use their space without any charge.
4) Please keep your RSVP as up-to-date as possible, even if you're updating on the morning of the meeting.
5) Please try to be on time. If you'll be more than 30 minutes late, please consider joining us after we finish around 5:00pm.

    To organizers,
I have 2 questions as below..

I'm on an attendees' list however since I might not be able to be on time, I'm thinking about getting off from the list..

    1. Without being on a list, can I still attend the meeting starting at 5?

    2. Is it easy for a first-timer to blend in at the later meeting without attending at the earlier one?

Thanks in advance for your reply!

    August 24, 2013

    • Ayaka

      Hi Mike,

Thank you for your reply. I will change my rsvp to no then and join you guys at Failte around 5:15.

      Thanks,
      Ayaka

    • Martin

Ayaka - you are welcome to join the ALTERNATIVE Meetup event...this will be at the same venue as the 5.15 drinks, or close by. We will meet up for drinks with the other group afterwards. It is ok if you arrive late for our group. I will be posting details in a minute. You don't need to commit, just see how you go

Hello All - In order to cater for all the people on the Waiting List too, I have proposed to the organisers that we run an identical meeting simultaneously this Sunday at a separate, but nearby location.... If there is support for this, does anyone have any suggestions for a location?

    1 · August 21, 2013

    • Martin

Thanks for your response Michiko. The event is usually held in a 'private room' of the Gonpachi restaurant and everyone orders tea or coffee....So any restaurant or possibly pub with a private room would be ideal!!

      August 21, 2013

    • Mike

Let's give this a try. I've started a post on the message board (link is in the event description) to coordinate location and attendees.

      2 · August 21, 2013

  • Masaya

    Hello,
For those who said yes and are on the list of attendees, please update your attendance IF you can't come to the meeting on Sunday because Martin is trying to host another group nearby. This will reduce the confusion of which groups to attend. People on the attending list should come to Gonpachi as usual, and people who remain on the waiting list can attend the group Martin will host.

Thank you and look forward to seeing you.
