What Up Cruisers!

Here's this week's newsletter with ride info and Southbay bicycle news.

First off let me warn everyone. If you haven't read the local papers or blogs lately, bike theft is up in the Southbay. So it might be worth it to spend a few extra minutes locking up your bike when you take it out. Here's a video that can help you learn how...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6xnkEkP2WY&feature=related

Unfortunately one of our Southbay Cruisers, Tina, had her bike stolen recently. This story is particularly heart breaking for a few reasons. One is that they also stole her daughter's bike. Two is that, well they were both really nice bikes. And three, Tina went out to buy her bike so she could go on rides with us. She met her current boyfriend Pete at one of our rides and the two have been happily together since. At any rate, Tina wants to keep riding with us, but doesn't have a bike or a very large budget. If you know anyone who has a used bike for sale send her message.(She's listed as Tina 'Queen of the Two Step'

Upcoming Cruiser Rides...

The Creepy Cruise III - Saturday, October 24th, 2009
Creepy Cruiser ride/Post Ride Barbecue/Games/Bicycle Karaoke
Meet at 700PM/Rides at 7:15PM sharp
Ride starts and ends at the bonfire pit of Valley Park (corner of Gould Ave/Hermosa Ave in Hermosa Beach)

We will cruise 8 - 10 miles at a slow to moderate cruiser pace as well listen to a special creepy cruise mix from the soul cycle. We will cruise partly on the strand and partly through the streets and neighborhoods. Coming in costume is highly encouraged but not required. (No need to get elaborate and break the bank on a costume, be creative instead. There's probably something in your closet that you can make one with.) Bring a light for your bike or buy one at the ride for $12 w/batteries. Also $1 donation is suggested to cover firewood, charcoal and expenses for those of you staying for the post ride event. (If you want to barbecue bring your own food to cook, we will supply charcoal and firewood.)

Superhero Thanksgiving Ride - Nov 14th, 2009
We will cruise the Southbay dressed as Superheros to celebrate Thanksgiving. Bring a light, and a canned food item as we will have a local charity pick up canned foods for us at this ride. Details to follow.Meanwhile save the date.

Manhattan Beach Fireworks Display Ride - December 13th, 2009
We will cruise to the Manhattan Beach Fireworks Display event at Manhattan Pier. Don't even think about driving to this event, it's alot easier by bicycle. Always a great display too. Here's an edited video that I shot of the display two years ago...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-ZN3wY-v3E

Third Annual Holiday Toy Ride - December 20th
We will cruise to Carol Drive in Torrance to view the neighborhood light displays, grab some hot chocolate and a cookie or two as well. Carol Drive is famous for it's Chinese Elm Trees which make idea branches to display holiday lights. This year's ride is planned to be on a Sunday night. In the past we did this on friday or saturday and it's just too busy at those times-too many cars-very hard to keep us altogether. So we are shooting for Sunday Dec 20th, 2009 (i noticed that I put the wrong date on the website btw. we'll change that soon.) Bring a toy to this ride. We will have a local charity pick up donated items. Details to follow, meanwhile save the date.

You may be fined up to $10,000 for riding your bicycle without a license in Santa Monica or at least that's what this blog indicates. Not sure if that is actually a law in Santa Monica, but it wouldn't surprise me. Learn more about this issue here....http://la.metblogs.com/2009/10/02/santa-monica-hates-bikes-more-than-legally-allowed/
