W2M&SN September Meetup: Abaqus, Planet 9, FireEagle

  • Sep 23, 2008 · 7:00 PM
  • Google / Building 40

Hi Folks,

First let me offer an apology to anybody who got lost at Google while searching for our August 19th Meetup. I take responsibility for not getting you detailed information about precisely where we were meeting. Second, we had a unique set of presentations in August. Geogad, Loopt, Earthscape and 3SI security systems were interesting and entertaining – seriously, really cool stuff. Special thanks to Pamela Fox and Google for the meeting space, security, and yummy ToGo’s sandwiches. September’s Meetup is scheduled for Tuesday the 23rd (this is a week later than usual due to scheduling and meeting space conflicts - in October we’re back to the third Tuesday of the month regular schedule). In September we are meeting at Google in a terrific roman-theater style room called Kiev Training Room. It’s located in Building 40 on Google’s 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway campus. Pamela has put together a handy map for us (thanks Pamela!):

September’s Meetup will include presentations from the following companies:

Shali Jain for Abaqus: http://www.abaq.us

“Record your Geotracks with a phone and other GPS devices. Annotate with mulitmedia & organize your GeoDiary. Publish to any site on the web for location-based activities such as fitness, travel, social networking, mobile work etc.” David Colleen for Planet 9: http://www.planet9.com/flash_index.html

“Planet 9 Studios was founded in 1991 and was the Internets' first 3D content provider. The company is a California Corporation based in San Francisco and is privately held. Mission – Planet 9 is building the next generation of data and software to bring 3D city interfaces to applications. Vision – We believe that 3D city interfaces will enrich a wide range of consumer and business applications.”

Tyler Bell for Yahoo’s Fire Eagle: http://fireeagle.yahoo.net/

“Fire Eagle™ is a new service designed to make it safe and easy to build and use location-aware applications and services. It's a place where users can store and manage information about their current location that trusted apps and sites can update or access. Fire Eagle exposes a rich set of web services that allow developers to write location-aware applications.”

Please join us for an innovative and inspiring evening of geospatial and social web apps. Come for the information, stay for the community. Remember you make this Meetup great.

Glad I could make it. I'm excited to hear what services get built using FireEagle in the near future.

This was my first but certainly not the last attendance to the Meetup. It is a good platform to know, share and network.

Two LBS position infrastructure services (Abaqus & FireEagle) and one high-level city modeling
    & presentation service/product (Planet 9). A nice combination. All worth a more in-depth check
    out on their websites.

Good presentations + overall format - thanks! . . . . . . . One aspect that would make them a bit more compelling for me is a clearer articulation of the user/market needs (current or anticipated) that they are trying to address; (i.e. the what & why before the how!); & how their approach is superior (hopefully!) to other attempts out there. . . . . . But, in any case, it's always great to see the process of innovation in practice - and I look forward to the next meetup!
