Towpath Trail: Big Bend - Mustill Store – Beaver Marsh - 6.2/17.4 miles

Ride Name: Cycling the trail through the Valley
Trail: Towpath Trail – Big Bend - Mustill Store – Beaver Marsh
Rating: Beginner, Intermediate
Ride Type: Double Back
Distance: 6.2/17.4 miles roundtrip

Heading south from the Metro Parks Big Bend trailhead, the Ohio and Erie Towpath Trail descends on the serpentine boardwalk as you approach Big Bend where the Little Cuyahoga and Cuyahoga Rivers meet. Continuing south, you cross under Memorial Parkway.  Passing along and through locks, you arrive at Mustill Store. Turning your bike north, you trace your tire tracks back to the Big Bend trailhead.

Happy with a shorter ride… feel free to drop out. Up for a longer ride… continue cycling north passing the portaging Indian statue as you parallel Merriman Road. The Cuyahoga River runs along your path as you enter the Cuyahoga Valley National Park at the Botzum trailhead. Following the trail through the woods along Riverview Road, you arrive at the beaver mash. Bike turned, you follow the Towpath Trail back to the Big Bend trailhead.

Double back rides give cyclists flexibility on rides. Cyclists begin at the midpoint and cycle to the first destination. The group turns and cycles back to the start. Cyclists wanting a short ride end their ride. Cyclists up for a longer ride continue to the second destination and back to the midpoint. There you have it; a double back with two rides options!

Tonight’s ride travels at 10 mph and typically takes 2 hours including photo-ops and rest stops. The ride is rated for leisure cyclists who enjoy cycling 10-12 mph on flat trails with an occasional hill or elevation gain. The trail surface is mixed with areas of both asphalt and packed limestone. It is relatively flat with some moderate elevation changes. The ride should be a comfortable ride for the intermediate cyclist. It is ideal for a beginner cyclist who wants a small challenge.

This ride is on the calendar of the Spin-off Cyclists . We encourage you to join us on this and other rides. We are a group of cyclists of all ages and abilities who cycle the trails of Northeast Ohio and surrounding areas for fun, health and friendship.

It's a very nice trail. Mostly pretty easy. Lots of variety. Lovely in the evening. We saw a deer about 7:45 just north of the Botzum Trailhead.Only about 6 feet away!

As we approach the end of our season, darkness comes sooner. We make every attempt to be back at the trailhead before darkness. You should however be prepared with a headlight on evening rides.

That is a good point Ladonna. Headlights will be helpful as it is getting darker earlier now.
