The Spokane Secularists Meetup

We will start out with a half hour minute social period at 3 P.M., and then begin official business at 3:30.

We are always looking for people who would like to present new and interesting ideas at the meetings, so if you have something – or even just an idea of something – let us know!

If you have an item you'd like to get on the agenda, you can let me know by contacting me by using the "Contact Us" button in the sidebar on the Meetup site, or by e-mailing Thomas at [masked].

I will also be announcing special events in our members' lives. If you are celebrating a birthday, marriage, anniversary, graduation, or anything else, let me know by contacting me using the above information and I'll announce it at our monthly meeting.

    Hi Tracy,

We have previously had discussions at our meetings, and it would be great to have a structured group discussion again. Propose a topic here, or send a message to me or Adrienne and we'll get it on the agenda.

continued from previous post...Why do people think that an outside creator dictating morals (and our fear of disobeying) as a higher moral ground than doing good simply because of empathy and observations of the world around us rather than the belief they will be eternally rewarded for good behavior?

Was good to meet the group for the first time tonight, I look forward to future meetups. Tracy

I would like to have a topic for each meeting, has this been done in the past? At an upcoming meeting I would be interested in a discussion of morality and secularism. You may have all read the recent poll about people thinking rapists were less likely to commit crimes than atheists. See the link below. Where does morality spring from, is it innate in human beings , does morality have an evolutionary advantage? Would this cheapen it somehow or make it more astonishing that these collections of cells such as we can conceive of such a thing? continued next post....

I had the same thing with my son when we lived in virginia and there were prayer meetings that the entire school filed out to participate in and my son abstained. This meant that the other kids all socialized, had gifts, and my son sat in the teacher's room alone. I was so angry. I did not forbid my son to attend, but he decided not to. Unfortunately, the ACLU tried to fight it and lost. Because the kids left the actual school property it somehow slipped past the rule of law, separation of church and state (this was a public school btw), and my son had 'alternatives' (what a joke).

I'd like to see if the group can give me support to confront, perhaps by a lawsuit, the teaching of christianity at the local public school. I've got a photo and an audio recording to share, which I'd like to do before the meeting, using this forum, if possible.
