A NEW and great plan for a 5-day long weekend. A walk through one of the most undiscovered and out of the beaten path areas of Spain: The vineyards (which will be on plain harvest), canyons and landscapes of the beautiful Ribeira Sacra (Galicia). Wine country , lush forests and medieval heritage.
Awesome hiking, the best food & wine and hot natural pools to top it off!
Galicia is new on our radar, and we're so excited with all the region has to offer, especialy because it combines sports, wild nature, culture and the best gastronomy! But we had to choose one place to start with... so we're starting in the Ribeira Sacra, one of the 10 must-see natural areas of this green and far away Spanish region.
The beautiful Ribeira Sacra, among the shores of the Miño river, is one of the oldest wine areas in Spain. The wines of Galicia have been around from as early as the II century before Christ. Some historians talk about Galician wine farmers in the iron Age.
We'll Leave Madrid after work and arrive to Orense and take a 15 min train ride to Monforte de Lemos, where we'll have dinner and spend the night with good food and better wine
After a short bus ride to Santo Estevo de Ribas do Miño, we'll be starting a 25km hike through old towns, vineyards, medieval bridges and beautiful forests overlooking the Miño canyon.
On the way, we'll cross a small Galician villages and, at the end, visit a beautiful winery perched over the river with one of the most magical views. The place is called Cabo do Mundo (Cape fo the World)
That day we'll end at the beach and boat dock of La Cova, from there we'll take a short hike to our night destination, on a rural hotel close by. We'll have dinner and drink yet more local wine and liqueurs.
We'll take off from where we left it, get back to the La Cova beach and take a boat to continue the route along the water, a complete different view of the high cliffs, We'll visit a gorgeous waterfall,.
Luisa will prepare for us a homemade lunch. Luisa is a local enterpreneur who, after studying tourism in London and working on the riverThames, decided to come back to her homeland and show the beauty of her own Miño river to out -of -the -commercial -path travelers like us.
After the day we'll dissembark in Os Peares, a town in the exact dividing line of the provinces ofLugo and Pontevedra province. In some houses, the kitchen is in Lugo while the bedroom is in Orense! A bus will take us back to the capital, Orense for a night out in town.
Today we have a special surprise day, of course with all the good food and wine of this region :)
Back in Orense, we'll leave our backpack at the hotel and take only a light pack and a bike to go around the different natural hotsprings just outside of the city, along the same river we just walked and sailed. The city was built by the Romans because of its thermal waters and some of the pools are at exact bath temperature, 36C!
We'll take the rest of the day, watch the sunset, have a hearthy dinner and say bye bye to our trip with yet more and more wine, yesssss! l
We'll wake up, relax, have a hearthy breakfast and take the train (or bus) Orense - Madrid. A long weekend that counts as a week!
