PERFECT PLAN FOR THIS LONG WEEKEND (15th IS A BANK HOLIDAY)
Valencia province is a Mediterranean mix of inland and coastal beauty. And also home to some of the more traditional Spanish dishes and little family restaurants. The mountains are a heaven for caving, hiking, canyoning and river rafting, while the rice marshes, eild duck colonies and beaches of La Albufera are the birthplace of Paella and makes for one of the most beautiful sunsets in the country.
We'll spend 2 days and 2 nights in the mountain town of Montanejos, surrounded by the Mijares river, which boasts an amazing ladscape with turquoise waters and vertiginous cliffs that look right out of a James Bond movie.
WED 15 we'll check out the beautiful river in town and go for a swim beneath the cliffs in that clear water that is at a constant 25 ºC, pictures promise to be amazing! Then we'll get back to our eco lodging and have their wood and stone oven pizza dinner up on the cliffs, overlooking the river, at the (very special and cute) refuge where we'll also spend the nigh, surrounded by the awesome environment around us.
THU 16 We'll go dry and wet canyoning in the canyon of La Maimona, the best well known wet/dry canyon in the area, until we find the starting point of the river, where we'll then walk along its waters, taking a dip and having lunch on the shore. Sometimes jumping through rockpools, passing behind little waterfalls, sliding down and even rappelling (no previous experience needed) in between the majestic cliffs and granite walls. The professional mountain guides have developped a special plan for Sporty People, outside of their menu, so we can experience the different parts of the local landscape.
After our picnic lunch we'll do some exciting walking ending through a cave, before jumpjg on our rafts to do a white water rafting finale for a glorious day. We'll finish with a beer i before getting changed and going to town for dinner and drinks.
Next day we'll take off to the beach. We'll be staying in La Albufera Natural Park for 2 nights.
FRI 17 - Here we are at an environmentally friendly and a lot less urban developped area of the coast of Valencia. La Albufera itself is a mix of fresh and salt water lagoon where the rice marshes thrive are a beautiful sight, especially at sunset, and the whole preserve is the ancient home of the paella.
We'll take a bike and make our way through one of the best beach routes, that will take us from the sandy beaches, across the pine forests, onto the salty marsh, full of water birds, until we get to a beach terrace to try out our first rice dishes of the journey and end the day swimming and having a few drinks on the beach before heading back to the hotel.
At night, we'll have dinner in our hotel, which happens to also be one of the best traditional restaurants in La Albuera, Blayet.
SAT 18 - On Saturday, those who want can head to Valencia in the morning and check out the city and the Oceanographic, and those who rather spend the day ant the beach can do so also righ there next to the hotel. In the afternoon we'll go for another bike ride, this time we're up for a super treat, first of all we'll take a sunset private cruise over the marches ina traditional small fishermen's dinghy just the way they did it in the old times. The sunset over the rice marshes here is a photographer's dream: water birds, cane, rice fields, traditional sailing dinghies... and then we'll head to the restaurant La Genuina, an amazing place that chefs and food connaisseurs all over the worls sing their poraises and try to keep a secret, inside a traditional 'barraca'. All sorts of traditional local dishes cooked just like grandma used to.
SUNDAY 19 - Ww'll check out and come back to Madrid so we can be home early and with enough time to relax and prepare to go back to work!
