Historic Midwest Dinner: Big Chief Roadhouse!

Now what, you might be thinking, is a "Historic Midwest Dinner"? A reasonable question! Our dinner tonight is in a Missouri (and national) landmark, a legendary stop on old Route 66 for nearly a century. While it's had its ups and downs, the Big Chief is nothing if not a midwestern institution, once a notable stop on the "mother road" as one passed through the tiny town of Pond when approaching - or leaving - St Louis. After sitting idle for a couple years, the Big Chief has been purchased, renovated, and given an almost entirely new menu - from burgers to pizza to pasta to pub grub to sandwiches to some fantastic appetizers and entrees - this is truly a quintessentially "midwest" restaurant. Nothing ethnic about it; it's just 100% St Louis! And in keeping with the best restaurants in St Louis... it's also really, really good!

Cuisine - Exactly what you'd expect, only a lot better. Starting with the appetizers, you'll find nachos and jumbo wings, chicken tenders and house-made chips. And you'll also find some of the tastiest four-cheese stuffed mushrooms ever, as well as the best fried green beans. Seven burgers, including bison, turkey, and vegetarian, as well as some excellent sandwiches and flatbread pizzas, round out the casual part of the menu. Moving into the entrees, you'll find some truly outstanding dishes. The crab and cheddar-stuffed tilapia with wild rice and balsamic-glazed asparagus is as tasty as it sounds; the filet modega, breaded and topped with provolone and bordelaise sauce, is even better if that's even possible. The chicken florentina with artichoke hearts is divine, and their take on lasagna is truly awesome... why didn't someone think of topping it with garlic cream sauce a long time ago? But their specialty is their beef brisket... all smoked on-site and with one the best barbecue sauces you'll ever taste. Some additional steaks, pasta, pork chops, and shrimp round out the menu. You can understand why I say that on the one hand it's fairly typical midwestern, but on the other hand, it's a very large step above!

Cost - All I can say is that they definitely didn't finance their purchase and renovation by inflating the prices! Starters, burgers, and sandwiches are all well under $10; pasta and pizza are in the low to mid teens, and the entrees range from the mid teens to the low $20s with nothing breaking $25, even the filet! This is some serious midwestern value!

Other Info - I don't want to hear any whining about having to drive "all the way out to Wildwood" for this dinner! If you live in West County, this restaurant is probably only 10-20 minutes away. It's located on Manchester, a mile or so west of Hwy 109. Take Hwy 100 to 109, exit and turn left, go to Manchester, and turn right. Their sign, on the left side of the street, is huge. Parking and the entrance are in the back!

Looking forward to seeing lots of my west county foodies for our "historic" midwestern dinner at Big Chief Roadhouse on Tuesday the 16th!
