Lightning Talks

Sorry about the last meeting being cancelled at the last minute. We will move the lightning talks to January. Please post your lightning talk topics in the comments for this meeting.

Everyone pick a topic. It can be anything that you want. Let's spawn ideas for more in depth talks and practice giving our own talks. Five minutes worth of words is all we ask.

Just leveraged some `Pathname` instead of farting around with a bunch of other classes. Thanks Charlie!

Great talks by everyone last night. I love lightening talks so they aren't so heavy. Two things I wanted to suggest to Bil, anyone else:

    1) Charlie wrote Destroy All Software as a resource on the whiteboard. I cannot recommend that series enough. There are a few episodes about sufficiently decoupling ActiveRecord from your app for both flexibility and speeding up tests. He's obsessed with test speed. +1 for checking it out.

    2) Bullet (https://github.com/flyerhzm/bullet) is very helpful with keeping an eye on your ORM, as long as your ORM is AR.

    3) (Off by one...damn) Brakeman is also really helpful with keeping general code quality in check.

Thanks for the recommendations! We'll check them out.

Awesome. It's a great format for getting people who have some good information but not enough time to put together a full presentation

An excellent meeting, and it was very gracious of the attendees to allow us to pump them for (really useful) information once everyone's talks were complete. :-)

What is everyone planning on talking about?

I'm incredibly ignorant regarding development. I was kind of hoping I could just come and listen and learn. I'm trying to create a quantified self data aggregation site. I could talk about that, but I'm not sure it would be very educational. What should i do?

Sweet, I can't wait to hear it. This is very important to a lot of people.

Will people still be there at 9?

I'll talk about Turbolinks, maybe comparing it to different approaches if I have time. I don't know much about this topic, but it's something I'd like to look into over the weekend.

Sweet. It only needs to be a five min talk. Just wet events appetite.

From what I understand Angie will be bringing FREE BEER. Thanks, Angie, for your generosity. I want everyone to bring there best.

Please post in here what your topics are so that we are not stepping on each other's toes. It would suck if we had ten people talking about Enumerable, or Rails routing.

I can't wait to see everyone there.

Wow, ask people to talk and no one shows up. Everyone coming have a topic?

How late are people going to be there tonight? I have a meeting at 7, but still want to get there afterwards.

    December 17, 2012

    • Amos K.

Usually people stay until 9 or 10. We don't start talks until 7.

    What is presentation?

    November 28, 2012

    • Amos K.

It means someone will be presenting on something. We have one meeting a month for presentations.
