UPDATE -- Atlanta AAII Stock Investing Subgroup

From: William L.
Sent on: Wednesday, July 15, 2009 11:57 AM

Greetings!

It has been a while since we’ve held our Stock Investing Meetup. I am working on getting us back on track starting in August. In the mean time, I wanted to extend an invitation to participate in the CANSLIM Stock Investing Meetup (see details below), held tomorrow night at 7pm at the GSU-Brookhaven facility (address on website). You can RSVP at http://www.meetup.com/CANSLIM/calendar/10790310/. We will be in Room 108. I will arrive around 6 pm or so for an informal Q&A session on any investing topic, including the basics of CANSLIM.

While our Stock Investing Meetup covers a broader range of topics, the CANSLIM Meetup covers a single specific methodology – the CANSLIM growth stock strategy pioneered by William O’Neil, publisher of Investors Business Daily (IBD) newspaper. You may find it of interest.

I hope to see you tomorrow!

Subject: [canslim] July Atlanta CANSLIM/IBD Meetup

Greetings! I hope everyone had an enjoyable independence day holiday.

Our next Meetup is scheduled for Thursday, July 16, 7pm, at the GSU Brookhaven Facility (address/directions on our website). I will arrive around 6 pm and will be available to answer any questions about the CANSLIM methodology or other stock investing related issues - for newcomers and veterans alike.

We will start with an analysis of the top 3 stocks in the top industry groups. As of this Monday's IBD newspaper (July 6, 2009), the top 10 industry groups are (with ticker symbols of the leading stocks in brackets):

1. Software [LFT]
2. Retail [FUQI, GMCR]
3. Business Services [HMSY]
4. Medical [N/A]
5. Internet [BIDU]
6. Computer [SYNA]
7. Leisure [N/A]
8. Telecom [N/A]
9. Auto [N/A]
10. Financial [N/A]

For the prior week, the winners & losers from the IBD 100, along with their ticker symbols and % up/down for the week were:

Top 10 Winners

  • Fuqi International FUQI 17.8
  • Synnex SNX 17.1
  • Pegasystems PEGA 7.2
  • Harbin Electric HRBN 6.9
  • Inergy Holdings NRGP 6.4
  • Syntel SYNT 5.9
  • Rock Tenn RKT 4.5
  • Green Mtn Coffee Roastrs GMCR 4.2
  • BJs Restaurants BJRI 2.9
  • Valeant Pharmaceut Intl VRX 2.6

Bottom 10 Losers

  • Sepracor SEPR -14.4
  • Orion Marine Group ORN -13.3
  • Changyou.com Ltd CYOU -12.6
  • Shanda Interactive Entmt SNDA -12.3

  • American Dairy ADY -10.1
  • MYR Group MYRG -9.8
  • Cantel Medical CMN -9.7
  • Perfect World PWRD -9.4

IBD 100 stocks with a black border (which indicates strong fundamentals, sound chart patterns and price within 5% of the buy point) include GMCR, ARO, CMG, MFE and SYNA (NOTE: the first 4 are in the top 20% of industry groups, the 5th is in the top 25% of industry groups).

As of Monday, the market outlook was in a confirmed uptrend with 5 distribution days for the Dow and 4 for the S&P 500, Nasdaq and NYSE in recent weeks .

A quick glance at the IBD 100 list shows some good chart patterns emerging - we will examine many of these in detail. As we did last month, we will examine fundamental data (like earnings performance, return on equity (RoE), profit margins, sales growth and debt/leverage) and technical analysis data (relative strength over the last 52 weeks, the accumulation/distribution (A/D) ranking, the chart patterns (price and volume), etc.). Stocks that meet with your approval should then be considered for inclusion in your portfolio using the CANSLIM portfolio construction rules (and money & risk management guidelines) - which are outlined in William O'Neil's book and which we reviewed at our May Meetup.

Of course our analysis will be modified to reflect the current market environment and leading sectors and stocks as of the week of our Meetup. As always, YOUR stock ideas will move to the top of the list for the group to analyze.

We will also raffle off another copy of the newest (4th) edition of William O'Neil's "How to Make Money in Stocks" book (if you've already purchased the book, you'll receive $10 as a substitute prize).

Kind Regards,
Bill Lyman
