If so then you may be interested in a new project I have been working on. I am beginning a new organization that will organize and participate in book clubs for at-risk youth of all ages. We already have official non-profit status and should be starting our first group in a few weeks. Partners on board include the Department of Juvenile Justice, Bay Area Youth Services (BAYS), Borders (providing discounted books), and Girls Inc. Our first group will actually be with Girls Inc. in Sarasota.

My most immediate priority is to try to get some volunteers on board with our first group at Girls Inc. in Sarasota. The only time required would be 1-2 evenings a month for a couple hours and be able to pass a background check (required in the state of Florida to work with children). If you are interested, please respond to me soon!

Additionally, there are many other ways and opportunities to help out. Once we get our first group up and running and have a better feel for the process, we should be starting with some other groups in other areas. BAYS already has one lined up in Manatee County waiting for us. Big Brothers, Big Sisters is interested and we have discussed one with the Florida Sheriff?s Youth Ranch and one of the residential drug programs for teens. This is just a start. I hope to have other partners in the whole Tampa Bay area and other locations down the road.

I also need help with many of the administrative projects besides working with the kids. For instance, the barebones website I set up needs a lot of help, coordinating with new partners and growing our groups, and most importantly, vetting books. I plan that one of our strengths will be a large database of books by age level, reading level, summary, rating, reactions if used in a group, discussion topics/questions and possible activities.

If any of this interests you and you would like to find out more or have any questions or feel like you would like to volunteer or have any skills you think would benefit and be willing to donate some time, please let me know. Feel free to forward this to any you think might be interested as well. My email is [address removed] or just respond to this email. I look forward to hearing from you!

Thanks,
Terri
