The Silicon Valley MySQL August Meetup

  • Aug 11, 2008 · 7:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

The August topic is SpockProxy by Frank Flynn of In his own words:

I [will] talk about the "Spockproxy" which is our version of the MySQL proxy (a fork off of their code). We built this to shard our database.

In a nutshell Spockproxy:
-is available at Sourceforge (code and more documentations there)
-does not use (or support) Lua -- the sharding config info is read from a database at startup
-only does connection pooling and sharding.
-is live now (we use it for

The talk is useful for anyone considering sharding; it doesn't matter if you use Spockproxy or any other solution because I go over all the issues we came across (and our solutions - which you may or may not choose to use) such as:
-how do you choose a sharding key
-what do you do with universal data (data which must be referenced across shards)
-bulk loading (why we don't use the proxy for bulk loading)

This Meetup will be held at Sun's Menlo Park campus in their Executive Briefing Center, Building 15. Enter the Sun campus and turn right on Network Circle. Follow the signs to Executive Briefing Center in Building 15.

Informative and educational stuff as well as practical pitfalls.

Was largely over my head and not a topic I'm likely to become involved with, but it was a good session and I was glad to introduce my friend Robert Gonsalez to the group and especially to Eric, whom I think may be able to help Robert's company.

The people were awesome. I had a great time networking and meeting people. The subject of the presentation was a little outside the scope of what I am looking to learn but still, it was presented pretty well. The discussion of the subject matter was very in depth and the members of the meet up showed they know their stuff.

Mr. Spock, Dr. Spock, No! Its Spock Proxy!

Good to learn more about proxy'in. You never know when you're gonna need it. Better to familiarize now, than in a pinch.
