DESCRIPTION:
This feature debut from playwright Martin McDonagh, whose short film Six Shooter won an Academy Award, is a brilliantly scripted, wise-cracking genre-bender with a surprisingly fibrous moral centre. Ray (Colin Farrell) and Ken (Brendan Gleeson) are two mismatched hit men, sent to lay low in the medieval Flemish town of Bruges after they botch an execution. Ray is antsy; he can't stand the place, while Ken finds their chocolate-box location a strangely soothing, nostalgia-inducing antidote to being holed-up with Ray. Stuck in Bruges, waiting for the call from gangster boss Harry (Ralph Fiennes in hilarious form), they become entangled in a series of bizarre and distracting local encounters while Ray emotionally unravels, his conscience tortured by the memory of their recent crime. McDonagh's sleight-of-hand is audacious: on the surface this is a profane comedy, a veritable gallery of overblown and absurd characters bursting with politically incorrect humour; underneath, it surges with rawness and vulnerability, the sad story of an ageing criminal wanting to save his troubled sidekick from repeating his own mistakes.
