Bassist Charles Mingus was one of the greatest jazz composers of the 20th century. A true original, his music encompasses the whole history of jazz, from Dixieland polyphony to avant-garde “free jazz,” yet his songs always sound uniquely “Mingus.” His music is some of the most challenging ever written and requires the utmost virtuosity from the performers. In addition to classic songs like “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat” and “Better Git Hit In Your Soul” the Tentette will be presenting some lesser-known gems from the huge output of music that Mingus wrote, tunes like “Hora Decubitus” and “Song With Orange.”
Joining the Tentette will be special guest, poet Charles Adler and also the wonderful trumpeter, Barry Caldwell, and Daven Tillinghast will vocalize on several of Mingus more well-known compositions. Featuring arrangements by the always amazing, Syd Potter.
Don't miss out on this special night of music! Come celebrate some the works of great composer and bassist, Charles Mingus, on the eve of the anniversary of his birthday.
