The left brain/right brain hypothesis came from neuroscience, but has since been disproved, However the two terms are still used metaphorically.
MBTI is similar to the left brain/right brain hypothesis in that it tries to create a structure through which we understand how and why cognitive abilities differ between people.
However, MBTI is much more nuanced, suggesting that there are 8 different types of high level cognitive activity which can be organised in 16 different ways, as opposed to the 2 types which can be organised in 2 ways as suggested by left brain/right brain hypothesis.
