Talking to Strangers #23

Hello everybody,

Thanks to everyone who came to Talking to Strangers #22 at the Devereux. I'm pleased to announce that Talking to Strangers #23 will be at the Boot and Flogger in Redcross Way near London Bridge Station

The Boot and Flogger was opened by Davy’s in 1964, and offers an atmospheric and comfortable place for a conversation, with plenty of charm. Expect wood paneling, comfortable leather and wood armchairs and friendly staff, and wines and fortified wines as well as the odd beer and soft drink.

As always, we'll all be talking to people we have never met before, discussing some thought provoking questions which we'll provide throughout the evening, and having some great conversations. We'll provide some things to think about and move you around at regular intervals so you can talk to a few different people. Once again it's £4.

We look forward to seeing you there.

With best wishes,

Tom Jones & Rebecca Gregory

And you were very interesting to talk to!

Thanks Andy. Was a pleasure speaking to you as well.

I really enjoyed the meetup. I liked the range of different kinds of people. I spoke to people from Nigeria, Singapore and Taiwan for example. I thought it was really good.

      Thanks Lance, great to hear!

Do you ever have frivolous questions like, if you could choose a special power what would it be?

    March 6, 2014

    • Tom

We certainly do. Rebecca and James from Thinking Bob are great at those ones

      March 6, 2014

  • Andy

I had a great time as usual but I have to say I didn't think the venue was a good choice. Too claustrophobic and no beer on tap. I also agree with others that the questions were not great this time. I have found that more philosophical questions tend to generate better conversations rather than questions that seem too personal. I'm not put off by personal questions but many people seem to be.

Great to have your input Andy. I think I was in a bit of a melancholic when writing the questions this time, so will try to pick a time when I'm more pensive and philosophical next time! Really kind of you to let me know though as I do really value feedback like this.

Most questions were dull. People were very cautious about what they were saying. Organiser has a financial interest, otherwise they wouldn't make first timers pay.

    March 2, 2014

    • Tom

Thanks, I guess you won't be reading this but I'm sorry you found the questions dull. I thought they were thought-provoking, but I will try harder next time. On the other bit, all I can say is for over a year I ran this event alone and for free, funding it out of my own pocket but it was very disorganised and people complained. This is why I teamed up with Thinking Bob, who are very professional and have made it a much better event. It does take time and effort to put these things together, and those involved end up making less than minimum wage for their time. I hope everyone else understands.

Oh dear, I just realised one reason talking strangers might become an issue… -extra expenses, like the £4 just to play might be one…(!!).

    February 25, 2014

    • Tom

David, if you genuinely can't afford the £4 please let me know. We try to keep the cost affordable but I'm very keen to ensure it doesn't prove prohibitive for anyone...so if you really can't afford it we might be able to sort something out.

  • Tom

    Hello everyone,

Very much looking forward to the next Talking to Strangers. We're already working on some interesting topics for discussion, and in the meantime, here are some we talked about last time:

    > Should we talk about our feelings more or less?

    > If a memorial was being erected to you where would you want it to be?

    > Do you need to be friends with your colleagues to be successful at work?

    > Is the internet good for us?

    February 14, 2014

    • Tom

But P C J, if the memorial *had* to be somewhere, where would it be?

      February 18, 2014

    • Tom

      Nice!

  • Ravinder H.

    Hi there,
Do you pay at the door or online in advance?

    February 16, 2014

    • Tom

Hi Ravinder, just come along and someone from ThinkingBob (probably Phil) will collect from you on the evening.

I'm not sure… -for one thing, what will be so great, to merit the £4… My interest wasn't only re: dating, but I'm unsure what extra we get, other than a forum. And isn't that the sole function of all of 'Meetup' anyway..?!

    February 8, 2014

    • Aisha

Hello how long does the session last?

      February 12, 2014

    • Tom

Hi Aisha...it usually lasts til after 9pm and people stay til closing time but you are of course free to leave at any point.

      February 12, 2014
