Come and sing! Let's raise our vibration (•ᴗ•) Singing together is a profoundly human activity. All ages, cultures and backgrounds welcome! Families and small kids welcome!

Kirtan (pronounced keer-tahn) is a musical conversation, where we sing ancient mantras set to music. Typically it is done with a leader who "calls" the mantra, and the group who "echoes" the mantra, so we are singing back and forth to one another.

We set the mantras to music (as opposed to just speaking the words) because music bypasses the conscious, rational processes of the brain and helps access our emotions directly. Kirtan helps you tap into feelings of love, devotion, peace, and unity that are already present within your heart.

Kirtan is equal parts science and art. Humans figured out long ago that singing this way nourishes the mind, body and soul. By chanting together, we entrain our individual vibrations and raise each other up in a positive, loving way. Kirtan feels awesome! You don't have to have any musical talent or experience with yoga to enjoy kirtan - it is for everyone.

Part of the beauty of kirtan is that it operates on many levels simultaneously.
Kirtan can:
♢ increase lung capacity to create deeper breathing

♦ restore balance between the right and left hemispheres of the brain, and between the physical and subtle bodies

♢ cultivate a meditative practice of being in the moment with the music -- turn off the anxious monkeymind ;)

♦ activate the parasympathetic nervous system, creating the relaxed state necessary for the body to heal itself

♢ provide an authentic way to spend time with people from many cultures and walks of life

♦ empower your energy system with the healing frequencies contained in ancient mantras

♢ help you connect with the divine aspects of yourself

The kirtan experience can be different from day to day and from one song to the next. Sometimes the energy is euphoric and powerful, inspiring dancing and drumming. Other times it is calm, introspective, nurturing and subtle. Afterwards, it always seems to feel like you got what you needed!

Kirtan is an ancient practice yet it is constantly evolving. DJs and MCs are adding to the musical conversation, like DJ Drez -- https://bit.ly/2qeDbfe

Other modern kirtan artists to check out: Krishna Das -- https://bit.ly/2EuP4CO , Jai Uttal, Wah, Deva Premal & Miten, MC Yogi, DJ Drez, Ben Leinbach.

Kirtan at Suananda // Sathorn

Suananda Vegetarian Garden Cafe

Good vibes Thursdays :) Singing together is perhaps the most ancient and beneficial group practice. Humans are built for rhythmic togetherness (singing, dancing, drumming, even rowing). Kirtan is singing spiritual songs and mantras in a group. It's bonding, it's uplifting, and it can be a profound experience but it is not overtly 'serious' or exclusively 'religious.' Many people who don't feel particularly religious still enjoy singing in church, because singing together feels great. Kate plays guitar and harmonium and she will lead in singing 5 or 6 songs in a call-and-response style. Most of the songs come from India, with the occasional song from indigenous American or South American culture. Along the way Kate will share the meaning of the mantras and perhaps a myth or story too. You don't need any musical talent to enjoy it. Kirtan is for everyone and we sing as a group so no one will hear you! 😉 The mantras we sing are timeless and universal. Kirtan groups always tend to be super-diverse, with people from many different countries and cultures, different ages and backgrounds -- families and small kids are very welcome! ♦ Wear comfy clothes; all you need to bring is your voice. It's not a yoga class, we just sit and sing together. ♦ NO musical talent or experience is necessary! Promise! ♦ Our kirtan is 100% donation based. Everyone is welcome. You'll feel relaxed and uplifted afterwards :) ♦ There's a yoga class immediately following kirtan at 7:30pm, so bring yoga clothes if you feel like a bit of yoga after. See you on Thursday ✌ Kate is originally from California and she's lived in BKK for three years. She is a certified hatha yoga teacher, and lifelong student of music, healing, the human body and the plant kingdom. When she's not making music with other humans, Kate practices Thai Massage. 💚

Kirtan Jam at The Home BKK // Asok

Singing together is perhaps the most ancient and beneficial group practice. Humans are built for rhythmic togetherness (singing, dancing, even rowing). Kirtan is singing spiritual songs and mantras in a group. It's bonding, it's uplifting, and it can be a profound experience but it is not serious or exclusively 'religious.' Many people who don't feel particularly religious still enjoy singing in church, because singing together feels great. Kate plays guitar and harmonium and she will lead in singing 5 or 6 songs in a call-and-response style. Most of the songs come from India, with the occasional song from indigenous American or South American culture. We'll begin with a traditional kirtan and then when everyone's voices and musicality (and right brains!) are awakened we will do a bit of jamming. Using our voices, drums, rattles, shakers, chimes, and bells we will get creative and make spontaneous music as a group. You can sing in your native language, sing a part of a mantra, repeat the sound of Om, play the drum, or just listen for awhile. It's free-spirited and it feels great to be a part of the jam. Traditionally, kirtan (or bhajans, or medicine songs) is the call-and-response singing of ancient mantras. Kirtan is equal parts art and science. All is sound, all is vibration.. we now know that seemingly 'inert' matter is moving and vibrating. When we sing, we create sound waves. Mantras are specific sound waves that have positive effects, like returning us to calm and centeredness. Simply put, kirtan feels awesome! 🎵 You don't need any musical talent to enjoy it, promise! We sing in a group so no one will hear you! 😂 Its community-building to get together and make music. 🎵 Wear comfy clothes; all you need to bring is your voice. It's not a yoga class, we just sit and sing together. 🎵 All ages, backgrounds, cultures welcome. Our kirtan group is super diverse. 🎵 Families and small kids very welcome! Arrive late, leave early, take the kids outside for a walk and come back in, no worries. 🎵 Our kirtan is 100% donation based. We kindly suggest 200B and your donations go to the Khlong Toey Music Program, which brings music classes to children in Bangkok. Come sing, chat, and chill on a Sunday evening. You'll feel relaxed and uplifted afterwards :) See you at The HOME! ✌ Kate is originally from California and she's lived in BKK for three years. Kundalini Yoga + Kirtan @ SKY Yoga

SKY Yoga

Come breathe, stretch, and sing! ✌ Singing in a group is a natural way to connect with yourself and others. The first half of the class consists of Kundalini yoga led by Raj (stretches, postures, breathing exercises and mudras). We settle into stillness to sing in the the second half of class, with an acoustic kirtan set led by Kate on guitar. Kirtan is the traditional practice of singing mantras, like a singing-meditation. It is simple, relaxing and uplifting. In Kundalini yoga there is a lot of emphasis on 'spinal flexing' .. a constant movement of the spine with powerful breath with a purpose of heating up the spinal cord, making it stronger and more flexible as well as building muscles that support the spine. The spine is where the Central Nervous system exists and works, each function of our organs is connected to the spine. Age is not measured by the time you spend on Earth but rather by how straight and strong the spine is! ♦ Wear comfy clothes; yoga mats are provided. No experience of yoga is necessary, all levels welcome. ♦ Families and small kids are super welcome! Raj has an awesome play-area for kids so they can wander in an out of kirtan or go and play, whatever they feel like. This is a home studio and part of our vision is providing a community space for people of all ages to feel comfortable. ♦ NO musical talent or experience is necessary! We sing in a group so no one will hear you ;-) ♦ Our kirtan is 100% donation based. Everyone is welcome. We kindly suggest 300b but whatever you can contribute is enough. We want to build community here in BKK. Kate has been practicing yoga for many years, and she discovered kirtan music in her yoga teacher training. She loves the confluence of meditation, deep breathing, connection with others, creativity and expression… singing this way with other humans feels awesome! When she’s not singing, Kate practices Thai Massage. See you on Thursday!
