Is anyone out there in absolute awe of the palpably wide reach of government today, or is it just me? One of my favorite short stories is E.M. Forster's "The Machine Stops," a good portrayal of what happens when folks come to depend on "the machine" -- any machine!

At least I haven't been getting any calls at work lately from the Census folks who call me several times each month to fill out and return the mandatory forms they bother private businesses with. Even my boss (who I'm pretty sure is a Democrat) agrees with me that they only call to harass because they have nothing else to do and their jobs are clearly a waste of everyone's time.
