DATE CHANGE: This Meetup has been moved to Sunday, Oct 13th
Next Art History Channel Meetup: Getty Villa (Malibu)
The Getty Villa in Malibu is the home of the Getty’s Greek, Roman, and Etruscan antiquities. The Villa design was inspired by the Villa of the Papyri at Herculaneum and incorporated additional details from several other ancient sites. The original Villa of the Papyri was buried in the great the eruption of Vesuvius in 79AD. Since our last visit to the Villa in 2010 I have taken a great interest in the 1st century Roman history and that is precisely the time period of when the original Villa existed so I am very excited.
***Please note: you have to reserve tickets (free) to get in and it's $15 per car. Do not wait until the day before, because it could be sold out. Also note, you can skip seeing the fresco demonstration at 11-noon and just show up for lunch and the 1:00pm lecture. Reserve your tickets here: http://www.getty.edu/visit/
The lecture will cover a good dose of First Century Roman history, and how we can differentiate between Greek, Roman and Etruscan art. The day will also start with workshop lecture on fresco painting from 11AM- Noon (only) in the reading room (presented by the Getty).
The Schedule for Sunday, October 13th:
Noon-1:00pm –Outside Café & Lecture. Grab lunch or a glass of wine and join us at the outdoor café.
