Join us for a live presentation with Shuai Wang, Kristin Mathis, J.M. Hamade, Amy Angelo and Danny Larkin on the Year of the Snake, and the symbolism of snakes in Chinese and Western astrology.

Panel Description:
On the occasion of the year of the snake, join us for an evening panel with multiple speakers that will explore the significance of snakes from the perspectives of both Chinese and western astrology.

Shuai Wang will open with an introduction to the lunar new year and the energetic shift into the year of the wood snake. In the Chinese zodiac, the snake is the sixth animal and associated with wisdom, strategy and intuition. The wood element adds themes of creativity, flexibility and growth to the snake’s traits. How can these ideas guide us during the major astrological shifts of 2025?

Kristin Mathis will examine how the figure of the snake provides a perfect window into the weird and wonderful worldview of the Orphic Hymns. Starting with a very brief introduction to the Orphic Mysteries, we’ll look at how the hymns and their Greek wordplay open up possibilities for radically revising our understanding of the historical origins of astrology, our cosmos, and our place in it.

J.M. Hamade will explore fixed stars and lunar mansions/stations which hold strong ophidian qualities, as well as some ways of interpreting and engaging with these asterisms through the use of cross-cultural astrologies.

Amy Angelo will delve into the fascinating world of asteroids with deep mythic connections to snakes and serpents in ancient mythology. Discover the stories of celestial bodies like Asclepius, Lilith, Hygeia, Medusa, Vipera, Pytho, and Pythia, and their profound symbolism. Learn how the placement of these snake asteroids at key planets or angles in a birth chart can reveal themes of healing, divination, and primordial power. Across cultures, serpents embody transformation, feminine cycles of death and rebirth, and the promise of new life. Snakes guide us through the darkness, helping us confront our fears, shadows, and demons to emerge renewed. She will guide an exploration of how these asteroids invite us to embrace the mysteries of healing and transformation.

Danny Larkin will dig into snakes in the Irish manuscript tradition, in which the snake’s process of shedding its skin was seen as an allegory for self-renewal. Then, we will re-conceptualize the doctrines of rulership as a snake through the astroloical chart. Many of us have a ruler of the ruler of the ascendant. At the risk of sounding like a silly tongue twister, many of us of us have a ruler of the ruler of the ruler of our Venus. In this way, a "rulership snake" twists through the house of our chart planets. Are we cooperating with the rulership snake for each of our planets and points? Or perhaps, is there some skin to shed to cooperate more fully with this energetic slithering between houses?
