High Point State Park/Southern Loop - 6+ Miles

Instead of hiking to the monument this hike will take us to the southern part of High Point State Park. The hike will start on the Appalachian Trail, which will have a couple of climbs and viewpoints. After stopping at the Rutherford Shelter, we will return on the Iris Trail which passes Lake Rutherford. The second part of the hike is easier than the first. Overall, this hike is easier and shorter than the monument loop which we will do in September.

There are no facilities at the hike location so find a place to stop on the way or allow extra time to stop at the park office which is 1/4 mile north of the hike location.

Bring plenty of water and snacks, and appropriate seasonal items (sun- and insect-protection in summer, and crampons in winter). Day-of-hike-only phone: 201-470-9317.

**Note** We hike at a moderate pace, and never leave anyone behind. Our hikes are not suitable for fast hikers who like to forge ahead of the group.
