What we're about

The Abode of the Message was founded in 1975 as an experiment in living the “Message” of Hazrat Inayat Khan, the first Sufi teacher in the West.

Set on 350 acres in an historic Shaker village, the Abode’s mission is to provide a sanctuary for spiritual exploration and community, in harmony with nature. The purpose of the Abode is to providing a home for the Message and a living example of its practices in action.

Each year, the Abode hosts teachers and educators from many spiritual backgrounds, welcomes a diverse array of groups and events, conducts individual and group retreats, and sponsors interfaith classes, dialogue and programs. In its Shaker buildings and mountain camp, the Abode has facilities to host events for 15-200 people.

At the Abode you will find:

• A sanctuary from everyday life. One where you can explore yourself and your spirituality in community and in safety.

• Spirituality that is accessible and welcoming: Universalist, and embracing all paths to the Divine.

• A diverse community united in service, and dedicated to the values of the Message of Spiritual Liberty as expressed through the teachings of Hazrat Inayat Khan and his descendants.

• Practices, activities, classes and events. Elemental and nature-based contemplative practices: Introductory, Intermediate & Advanced. For individuals and groups.

• Training and practices to cope with the complexities of modern life that work in the real world.

• A campus set on 350 acres of forest, farmland and pastures, in an historic Shaker village.

Toward the One,
the Perfection of Love, Harmony, and Beauty,
the Only Being;
United with All the Illuminated Souls,
Who form the Embodiment of the Master,
the Spirit of Guidance.

Following our weekly Sunday Morning Meditations at 10am. The Universal Worship or Interfaith Prayer will celebrate the Unity of Religious ideals which exists in all religions at 11am. We light a candle for each of the major religions and one for all the unknown beings who have brought light to the world throughout time. We read scriptures on important and relevant themes of the day from each of the scriptures and often accompany these with music, chanting or dance. All are welcome to attend and we have a brunch at 12:30 for $12 where we socialize and get to know each other better. The Abode is situated on Mt. Lebanon, a historic Shaker Village. Surrounded by 350 acres of woods and pastures, a CSA farm, residential and retreat facilities. The rural setting offers an extraordinary gathering place to pursue spiritual explorations, embracing harmony between all beings and the natural environment.
