Mishe Mokwa and Sandstone Peak Loop
Come join us on one of my favorite local hikes as we join other Meetup hiking groups for a massive convergence at Tri-Peaks for lunch and socializing! Each group is doing a specific route to the top. We will be doing the Mishe Mokwa.
Have lunch, bag a peak!
Sandstone Peak is the quintessential destination for peak baggers in our area. That's because it's the tallest peak in the Santa Monica mountains (3,111 ft.) AND, it's the only tallest peak within close driving distance of the Conejo Valley.
We'll start out on the very pretty Mishe Mokwa trail, a single track overlooking a volcanic rock-lined canyon passing Balanced Rock, a giant boulder sitting precariously on the canyon wall. Bright green ferns edge shady parts of the trail and chapparal dot the hillsides. The Mishe Mokwa takes us to the Split Rock picnic area in an oak covered grove. But we won't stop here. We'll start a moderate climb as the trail widens, taking us up to a giant plateau surrounded by sandy colored volcanic formations. At the top, we'll meet the other hikers and enjoy lunch and socializing. We'll bag our peak, and finish off our loop on a descending fire road back down to the parking lot. This is a truly amazing and beautiful hike!
Total miles: 5.8
Elevation gain: 1400'
Rated: Intermediate/advanced hikers
The terrain has varying packed earth and stony/gravel areas so sturdy footwear is a must.
Bring plenty of water and lunch! I suggest wearing layers, a hat, sunglasses, etc. It could be windy at the top.
CARPOOLING IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED SINCE THERE ARE THREE GROUPS TAKING THIS ROUTE. THE PARKING LOT IS SMALL AND WILL FILL UP QUICKLY!! GIVE YOURSELF PLENTY OF TIME TO GET THERE. WE WON'T BE WAITING THE EXTRA FIFTEEN MINUTES FOR YOU TO SHOW UP FOR THIS ONE.
DIRECTIONS: From Thousand Oaks, take the 23 (Westlake Blvd.) South for 7 miles 'til you get to Mulholland, a three way stop sign, and turn right. Go just under half a mile and turn right on Little Sycamore Canyon road (keep your eyes out as it sneaks up on you). Drive 4.5 miles, staying on Little Sycamore (it turns to Yerba Buena Road at 2 miles) to the trailhead parking lot on your right.
*NOTE* There are two parking lots. We'll meet at the first one on the right. If that one is full, there is another one down the road on the left but be sure to meet us at the first one since the second parking lot has a different start.
