Due to excesive high water levels, I have moved this trip to the Little Darby.

  • May 3, 2014 · 2:00 PM

Due to the extreme water levels and cfs this trip is being diverted to the Little Darby. The put in is just 75 yards south of the intersection of Amity Rd and Scioto Darby Rd, west of Hilliard.

The trip is 11 miles down to the take out at Darby Creek Metro Park.

Although a PDF will still be required, spray skirts will not. This is a long 5+ hour paddle so be prepared.

I'm kinda bummed. No video of the upstream kayaking? Now, that would have shown you some extreme facial expressions, extraordinary verbalizations of all kinds, and bodily reactions to extreme stress. :P. Thanks Kim. It brought a tear to my eye I was giggling so hard.

LOL, the camera battery only lasts 2 hours. We were like 5 hours in when we had to paddle upstream! Otherwise, yes, that would've been good. Next time, lets not take so long to screw up ;-)

Definitely got a post-winter hibernation kayaking work out today, but it was all in good fun. That stretch of water is really scenic, and now we know for sure where to hop out, LOL. Kudos to everyone who paddled upstream for a mile. You're mighty mighty!

I really appreciate the spirit and attitude of everyone who was on the trip yesterday. Yes, it was a great paddle, very beautiful and scenic. So much so, I decide to take us a mile past our take out so we could further enjoy the river. :) Seriously though, I'm just now getting all of the "egg" wiped off my face. I applaud Jon and Doris for paddling the 1 mile back up stream with me. Although it makes for a good story, let's not do that again. LOL

THANKS AGAIN GUYS, THE RIVER RATS ROCK!

This was an epic adventure! Beautiful day and beautiful stretch of the creek. It was great to be back on the water with the River Rats. Thanks for putting this together Sami.

Very beautiful and peaceful river to paddle. We saw about 40 turtles on this trip and more little rapids. Nice to meet you Doris, Ben, Jon, and all you other people I already know ;) Amazing how dragging my boat from the car to the river seems like a long walk but dragging my kayak a mile down a service road didn't seem as long. Haha.

I was a great day! I got to spend it with terrific people on an beautiful waterway. The misadventure(s) really made us bond and has given me a memory that, in my own odd way, makes me smile.

This was a great river to paddle and "hike". It was an adventure. Hope all made it home safe.

Where do we meet? At that shelter house where we were a couple of weeks ago? Is this one good for kayakers who are not white water kayakers? I want to go but have no desire to injure myself.

    May 2, 2014

    • Sami

Yes, good for all skill levels

      1 · May 2, 2014

Not sure where you were a couple of weeks ago. The put in is just west of Hilliard at the intersections of Scioto Darby Rd and Amity Rd. At the intersection turn left and go approx. 75 yards and you'll see a public park entrance on the right.

Stay tuned my friends. I'm watching the Little Darby and the Big Darby of which are both safe to paddle. I'll let everyone know by 10am where we'll be paddling. As I see, as long as we're on the water somewhere does it really matter where? :)

Isaac, Just something to think about. If you get called to work half way down the trip how will you get back to your car to leave?

      1 · May 2, 2014

  • Bob F.

Gotta work tomorrow. I'll be thinking of you all. hope you guys are watching water levels cuz it's running pretty fast. recreational boat owners may want to think twice.

    1 · May 2, 2014

    • Sami

Thanks Bob, I'm actually going to divert this paddle to a more level 1 friendly paddle for some of the newcomers.

General announcement: Due to the recent rains, the Olentangy below the dam is running at 2000cfs. The water velocity in the Worthington area is now at 2560cfs. With the impending rain tomorrow these number will increase. The flood stage is still okay, just a little faster than normal.

If you have a spray shirt bring it. If you need one let me know what the size of your cockpit is and I may have an extra one to fit it.

    See you Saturday

Hello!! Trying to rearrange my commitments so that I can join tomorrow . . . So want to be there ;-) Total rookie/ flat water kayaker question: Why is this a "must wear life jacket" event? I have those crappy square orange pillow like life jackets (great for sitting on or leaning up against) virtually impossible to wear.

Marie, what is your life worth? GO buy yourself a decent PFD... you deserve better. As a River Rat member, the Outdoor Source will give you 10% off. ;-)

I concur with Bob. I wouldn't even allow you to paddle in these conditions without at least a Type 2 PDF.

This trip will be cancelled due to dangerously high water and current.

Yay, an afternoon paddle! I can drink too much tonight and kayak tomorrow. I don't have to choose, because lets be honest, drinking too much always wins

Hey guys, I'm committed to doing a big backpacking meetup on Saturday. However, Sunday I'm probably free. So if you don't get enough on Sat or you want to do it again on Sunday let me know. The location works wonderfully for me... probably only 15 mins from my apartment.

This is a beautiful stretch of the Olentangy river. When I cannot find a paddle buddy, I have gone solo. I drive about 2.8 miles further north on 315 to put in near Bunty Station Rd (on west side of river), paddle south and take out behind Hills Market (north of I-270). I pull my yak up on the bike trail, take half of my paddle with me to hitch hike back to my car. I have never had to wait more than 7-10 cars before somebody stops and takes me to my car. They are curious to see a kayaker...
Unfortunately I won't be able to join you this weekend.
    Have fun!

The put-in is at Hyatt Rd and Olentangy river. We'll be stopping halfway so, please don't forget to bring lunch. (Sandy wants to look for rocks) during our social break.

We paddled this stretch last weekend, we saw allot of turtles in the river. Enjoyable paddle even-though the water level was pretty low (278 cfs) we didn't have to drag our kayaks. Ask Sandy if you have any questions. :)
