About the Greater Philadelphia Thinking Society

The Greater Philadelphia Thinking Society is a Meetup group that brings together open-minded thinkers for stimulating and civically-oriented conversations. A unique element of our conversations is that we invite all participants to contribute their perspectives to enrich our discussions. Discussion leaders are members of the group who develop topics, questions and often provide background materials to facilitate interactive group learning.

Meetups include a reccurring 10:30 AM discussion on Saturdays and Sundays, where thoughtful people with diverse interests and backgrounds meet in a relaxing setting to discuss important issues. Topics, inspired by our members, include (but are not limited to):

  • Science, technology and design
  • Philosophy, religion and inspiration
  • Current events, politics and economics
  • Culture, literature and art
  • Education, personal development and health
These discussions provide a powerful platform for participants to share and process knowledge, ideas, and diverse perspectives. It is our conviction that these discussions can transform into deeper, more considerate understandings that can inform decisions and actions on a personal level and for the benefit of society. All are welcome to participate, interact, network, and learn from others at our events.

Our Mission

As mutual improvement and understanding are the basis for any significant change, our mission is to foster intellectual dialogue with a forum for the exploration of ideas in the Philadelphia area.

Background

Michael Tweed founded the group as The Ben Franklin Thinking Society and held the first meeting on February 11, 2007. Michael envisioned a social club akin to the Junto Club founded in 1727 by Ben Franklin to discuss questions of morals, politics, natural philosophy, and business affairs. On October 7, 2012 Michael Tweed stepped down as organizer, changed the name of the group to The Greater Philadelphia Thinking Society (GPTS), and a team of four Co-Organizers (Vince, Joe, CJ and Katie) took over. Although the name and some of the principal organizers have changed, we continue to provide a forum for the exploration of ideas. GPTS has held more than 500 events and membership in the group continues to grow.

Please see our Frequently Asked Questions for more information about our group and our meetings.

Leadership Team

Our current Organizing Team includes Joe Navidi, CJ Fearnley, Sandy Catz and Andrea Buonincontro, who provide coordination and we have more than 20 active discussion leaders on our Leadership Team. For information on becoming a discussion leader, please see the document Discussion Leader Guidelines.

Please contact us if you have a question, suggestion for a discusion topic or if you want to help in any way.

We start the conversation so come participate and accept your own genius.
