Barnhardt Trail #43

  • Carpool 8 AM at Target parking lot 16825 E Shea Blvd., Fountain Hills
  • Trailhead: Travel North on Beeline Highway, (SR 87) to FR 419. Mile post 239, 48 miles from Fountain Hills you will see a brown sign designating the Barnhardt Trail. Turn left and travel 4.7 miles to the trail head which is at the end of the road. It is a dirt road so high clearance vehicles are recommended.

From the Trailhead follow the signed Barnhardt Trail as it climbs up into Barnhardt Canyon. There are good views of the permanent stream in Barnhardt as the canyon narrows. A series of switchbacks lead around the head of a side canyon; Then the trail swings around a point into the upper basin of the Barnhardt drainage. There are excellent views of upper Barnhardt Canyon and the precipitous east slopes of the range.

Once the hangout of the Apache Indians, The Mazatzals have seen some mining activity but have been mainly used for grazing. These mountains have a reputation for rugged terrain.

The hike is an intermediate hike that climbs about 1500 feet in three miles to a grotto with a water fall. We will stop here for a break and then return to the trailhead.

We will stop in Fountain Hills for a late lunch. Location Euro Pizza Cafe, 12645 N. Saguaro Blvd., #11, Phone[masked]-0207. This restaurant overlooks the fountain.

There are no facilities at the trailhead.

Bring water, sunscreen, warm clothes, snacks, a camera and a smile

This is a wonderful hike in the Mazatzal mountains south of Payson.

As 3H has done in the past and in an effort to offset costs associated with 3H , there will be a voluntary $1.00 donation at the start of all Saturday and Sunday hikes.

Any questains call or text my cell[masked]-6597.

We will form our car pools at the Target meetup site. There will be plenty of drivers that know the way.

I would really like to do this one, but my youngest daughter with 2 of my great-grandsons are in town and their presence overtakes anything 3H has to offer. :-)
