RESCHEDULED: Building a Treehouse: Time to get your hands on it!

  • Jan 19, 2014 · 1:00 PM
  • John Leipold's Sanctuary

We have set the date! The next Treehouse Day is Sunday, January 19th at the usual 1pm. Please check your calendars and update your RSVP if necessary.

Please check the list of tools we need (below) in case there's something we can borrow for the day. Make a comment on the discussion page letting us know what you can bring.

I hope to see you there!

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

THE NEXT STEP:  Getting your hands on it!

Now the creative fun begins! We will be preparing the building site (clearing the area and building steps into the hillside), taking measurements and preparing for the build.

Come dressed appropriately in layers in case it's cold, bring work gloves (if you have them) and be sure to wear proper shoes for the terrain... hilly and a bit muddy in places.

Here's some tools we'll need for the day. Please note in the discussion area if there's something you can bring...

- pick axes

- shovels

- laser: level / measuring device ("Riverine" and Mona?)

- extra work gloves

- long measuring tape

- compass (iPhone?)

- chainsaws

- clippers (for branches)

- weedwacker

- power cords

- portable deer stand (John?)

- generator (John?)

- rope, winch & rigging

- large levels

- sledge hammer

If we're ready, we might begin the bridge and we'll need...

- wheel barrow (mixing cement)

- post hold digger

IF I MISSED SOMETHING, PLEASE MENTION IT IN THE DISCUSSION.

Does anyone know an arborist or someone familiar with trees? We really could use their advice and would be FOREVER grateful. Please invite them to attend and let us know.

Going forward, we've decided the schedule will be every other Sunday afternoon until it's completed. After this meeting we will resume in January... dates TBD.

GENERAL INFO
We will be designing, planning, prepping, and building this beautiful structure over the months to come. (Although it can change, the photo above is roughly the design we have in mind... similarly, there's a "tripod" of large trees. So the enclosure will be inside the trees with decking around the outside of the trees.)

NOTE: THIS PROJECT IS TEMPORARILY REPLACING OUR REGULAR CLASSROOM MEETINGS, HOWEVER CHECK BACK HERE FOR OTHER WORKSHOPS, TOURS, AND SUCH BEING OFFERED DURING THE TREEHOUSE BUILD

Please bring your favorite treehouse ideas. Photos, DVDs, plans... whatever you have. If you could bring a dvd we can watch it. Anything related to treehouses would be great! If you know about trees or treehouses, please come and share your knowledge! This is meant to be a fun and creative learning and teaching experience.

If you have access to tools you can loan for the project, let us know. Suggestions encouraged!

Even if you don't want to participate in the physical work, feel free to join us to check out our progress and offer your ideas and moral support! We'd love to see you there!

FOR DIRECTIONS TO JOHN'S please email me and I will send directions.

If you need assistance with directions, call John at[masked] or me at 828.443.3909. (Note: Cell phone reception is sketchy on the mountain.)

Hello all, the trail crew team finished up the bridge and it looks great. It is potentially a design we could use. Is there any way for me to share photos on here or would I need to email them?

Ok, I'll plan on being there too. I have a couple chainsaws, a large level, some shovels, a sledge hammer, a weed wacker, a long tape measure, and some chainsaw chaps. If I can remember all that :-) I'm no arborist but I have had some training in trees and tree defects that might be useful as well.

I've just got the one set but you're welcome to them. I don't always use them, depending on what kind of cutting I'm doing.

You guys are the greatest! Can't wait to meet you. (I hope it's warm!)

      January 8, 2014

I have one pulaski, one lopper, extra work gloves. I have been Class B Forest Service Chainsaw Certified in AZ but I do not own a chainsaw, I can run one. I also do not own chaps and will not run a saw with out! This will be my first event with you all :)

    Thanks!

You asked if I knew about trees

      1 · December 18, 2013

    • Kristen S.

Ah, yes! Thanks for the reminder. We just may want someone to confirm the location we've selected. I hope you can attend the next build meeting. Thanks in advance for your input!

Ok everyone! John called and reported that he's got a bug he doesn't think we want to share, so I'm rescheduling for January. Check back here for an update after 1/1. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Looking forward to some VERY cool projects in 2014!

    December 12, 2013

  • Amy A.

    ok

    December 12, 2013

  • Kristen S.

Hello Everyone! Is anyone able to bring any of the items listed above?? If we don't get participation we won't get much done.

Shovels, rakes, hand saw, clippers and a pick ax are primary.

Add "chainsaw chaps" for Amy if you have them.
