ON HOLD: Tour of NE Georgia's Earthship

  • May 1, 2014 · 9:30 AM

THE DATE OF THIS TOUR IS TBD. Please check back here for new date, time, directions and carpooling instructions.

(Holding for the Earthship owners to determine the next possible tour date.)

It's promised to be a very cool tour. I hope that will better work with everyone's calendars and the turnout will be HUGE!

Here's a bit more I grabbed from a website about the tour...

"Since Rosemary and co-owner Andrew Hickman do not do private tours of their earthship home, this is a once a year opportunity to see the progress they are making. They ask that you come prepared for cold weather, and you will be required to sign a waiver since it is a construction site. Note taking and pictures are encouraged.

The address is 3015 Wildcat Bridge Rd, Royston, Ga 30662. Use Google maps for directions because a GPS may not get you in the right place. You are welcome to bring friends, but please carpool if you can since there is limited parking. Although it is free, please make donations to builder and tour guide Andy for taking his time away from building to explain what they have done and answer your questions. It is a luxury to have an earthship you can view in person in this region with an expert to explain the details.

This is an awesome project with lots of extras included. It is done with concrete instead of earth, tires and beer cans so would be easier to get past code enforcers. If you have not been following the progress of this four years in the making, be sure to link to their Northeast Georgia Earthship Facebook page which is loaded with pictures. If you are ready to build one like it, talk with builder Andy and see if he can fit you in his schedule."

The owner called a few weeks ago. He is having scheduling difficulties and has asked that we hold until further notice. He is hoping for a spring tour. I'll update this page as more information becomes available. (The Meetup site functionality requires a date be entered, hence my stab at an approximate date.)

Myself and some of the Natural Builders are going to checkout the NE Georgia Earthship, looking forward to meeting some of the Tiny house group.

Ok, everyone! The votes are in and we're moving the date to January. (It's going to be a busy month!)

There is an Earthship next to the Prama Institute land on Panhandle Road near Marshall, down river from Asheville. Not sure the owner's name but they are on - or bought from - land from the Prama Institute. It's like the original design, ram-earth in tires and owner made. I saw it 5 years ago and it was 3/4's done. Bet it's finished now!

I have no contacts at the prom a Institute. However, they are on the web and I'm guessing contact information for the Institute will be there also. That is just a lead, not a sure thing I realize

Hey, Rich! Thanks for the lead. I'll follow up and let you know if it leads to something cool...

Yes, some time in mid January would be much better. I'm very interested in seeing that house since I saw the New Mexico earthships and want to build something like them one day.

Great! Another vote for January. Noted.

      December 10, 2013

  • Kristen S.

Hey guys~ They told me we can come any time (they love us) so if this day doesn't work out (it is really close to the holidays) we can arrange for another. Whattya think?

    December 9, 2013

    • Laura L.

I really want to go visit this house but we can't swing it in December since we are heading to visit family up north that same weekend. January would be much better.

      1 · December 9, 2013

    • Kristen S.

Yup. It's looking more like a January thing... or both if turnout for this date improves. I'll keep everyone posted here.
