"Dude, Where’s my Rover?: Deep learning for planetary rover exploration"

We will welcome Dr. Benjamin Wu (NAOJ) for the first Space Cafe Tokyo in 2020!

It can be surprisingly difficult to localize your rover when it’s roaming around on another planet. Dr. Benjamin Wu (NAOJ) will share some of the current challenges we face when exploring other planetary surfaces and introduce possible solutions based on recent advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence.

Speaker's Information:
Dr. Ben Wu is an astrophysicist by day and machine learning researcher by night. After completing his Ph.D. in physics at the University of Florida, he joined the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) as a postdoctoral fellow. He usually spends his time running supercomputer simulations and analyzing radio telescope observations to understand how stars form. Recently, he stayed a summer at the NASA Frontier Development Lab, an artificial intelligence research accelerator designed to apply machine learning to challenges in the space sciences and space exploration. He enjoys Japanese food, bouldering, and just having fun.
