Thought Experiment: Dark Forest
Ever wondered how humanity would respond to an asteroid heading for Earth? Or how the world might react to first contact with aliens?
Welcome to **The Thought Experiment** â a new kind of meetup where we explore big *âWhat ifâŚ?â* scenarios in a fun but thoughtful way. Each session, weâll pick one scenario (from global crises to wild sci-fi situations) and work together to imagine solutions, strategies, and possibilities.
This is for **curious minds of all kinds** â students, professionals, creatives, or anyone who enjoys thinking differently. Some people might bring research, others just bring imagination. Either way, weâll brainstorm together and see where the discussion takes us.
[Thought Experiment Site](https://thoughtexperiment.au/)
**We ask everyone to Buy a drink at the venue**
**You Need to have Conversational English.**
**Format:**
* Quick intro to the scenario
* Small-group discussions
* Share back with the group
* Wrap up + (optional) post-discussion drinks
For our first meetup, weâll introduce the format, get to know each other, and jump into a scenario together.
***Story Arc: Cosmic Dread***
Keywords: *Observatory, Alien Life, Game theory*
**Scenario: Dark Forest**
Coming in the Cosmic Dread Series
Far from cities, far from interference, the data kept coming.
Nothing arrived.
Nothing announced itself.
Stars simply began to vanish.
Not violently.
Not accidentally.
Always near places
that might have mattered.
The system noticed first.
Not as a warning.
As a correction.
If you wanted to end life,
you wouldnât target the life.
You would destroy the cradle.
And whoever is doing this
is patient.
Every act points
somewhere else.
Tonight, there is no invasion.
No defense.
No escape.
Only the question of whether
being noticed
was the first mistake.
Oxford Scholar â Saturday 3â5 PM.
A small group. Big imagination.
Just curiosity, debate and fun.

Philosophy Roundtable: Religion vs Spirituality
**PLEASE NOTE NEW LOCATION & ATTENDANCE FEE!**
Please join us this Sunday as we discuss the similarities, and difference, between Religion and Spirituality at large.
**We will meet at the Queensberry Hotel, 593 Swanston Street, Carlton (100m north of previous location) at 2pm for a 2:15pm start sharp.**
**We kindly ask attendees to pay $5 to attend to help with MeetUp costs & venue costs. This is not mandatory, but if you are a regular member it would be appreciated. Any extra moneys will go towards buying food and drinks for the table.**
There is no pre-requisite preparation necessary, nor a philosophical background, all that is required is a curious mind. These discussions are both a Socrates Cafe style discussion and lively metaphysical dojo, in the spirit of learning and friendly debate, so please feel free to challenge assumptions and be prepared to have your own assumptions challenged.
Find below some questions to consider, however these are free-ranging events and the below serve as a springboard for the discussion.
* What is the definition of Religion and Spirituality?
* What do Religion and Spirituality share, and what do they have apart?
* What does it mean to have connection and relationship with the Divine?
* What is the purpose of non-dual self realisation?
* What is the difference between Wholeness and Holiness?
* Is there a transcendent unity of religions as Perennialists suggest?
* What is "transcendence", in traditional religion and other spiritual paths?
* Are spiritual practices communion with the Divine, or communion with oneself?
* How do community centred vs individual experience spiritual paths compare?
* Is 'esoteric Christianity' a contradiction?
* Is there a relationship between modern moral ideas and Spirituality without religious structure?
* What has been the influence of the New Age spiritual movement on medicine and popular psychology?
* Is Jung complementary or a rival to historic Christianity?
* Is religion just spirituality plus outdated morality?
* Is spirituality just religion without the responsibility?
Hope to see you there!
Conversations with the School of Life cards
After some great discussions using these cards, we just had to continue!
"It isn't easy to get into a good conversation. Many of our best ones seem to have happened by chance. Far from it - we believe a great conversation always starts with someone asking a great question.â
The School of Life cards contain questions designed to get a group of people into entertaining and meaningful conversations.
This is a casual, social and fun event where we share our thoughts and experiences with a group.
We can cover topics like: Personality & Emotions, Work & Money, Family & Friendship, Travel, Culture & Taste, depending on the questions that end up being asked on the day.
Please arrive hungry/thirsty for us to keep up a good relationship with the venue that allows us to host our events.
\*\*\*
Meaningful Discussions events take place in 11 countries and this will be our 147th event in Melbourne! :) Please be try to arrive on time if you can.
This event will allow a thoughtful, respectful and engaging discussion. So if you're looking for open-minded, friendly and intelligent people, you've come to the right place!

Powering AI with Data Modernization: ETL Using Databricks & Unity Catalog
**Title**: Powering AI Through Data Modernization: Modernizing ETL with Databricks & Unity Catalog
In this session, we will discuss how enterprises are modernizing their data platforms by migrating from legacy ETL tools (such as Informatica and traditional data warehouses) to Databricks Lakehouse architecture, and how Unity Catalog enables enterprise-grade governance, security, and discoverability across data and AI assets.
We will start with food and drinks at 6pm and then move into the presentation at 6:30pm.
The session will cover:
* Why traditional ETL platforms are becoming a bottleneck for scale, cost, and AI adoption
* How Databricks changes the data engineering and analytics operating mode
* The role of Unity Catalog in centralized governance
* How this foundation enables AI and Gene.AI use cases on trusted data
* Q&A
Our speaker for this event is **Hirenkumar Dholariya**.
Hirenkumar Dholariya is a Senior Data Engineering Architect with 18+ years of experience modernizing enterprise data platforms for global Fortune 500 organizations, delivering up to 40% system performance improvement and 20â35% infrastructure cost reduction through large-scale migration from legacy ETL platforms to cloud-native Lakehouse architectures. He specializes in Databricks-based data engineering, Unity Catalogâdriven governance, and building scalable, secure, and real-time analytics platforms.
