**🌍 Connecting locals and internationals in London 🌍**
Join us every Tuesday evening in Holborn for the London Language Exchange, where over 60 people gather each week to practice new languages, share cultures, and make new friends.
See pics of our previous events on our [Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/babblelondon), and chat to other members who are coming via our [whatsapp group](https://languagexchanges.com/whatsapp/).
**🙋 Who is this for?**
All languages and levels are welcome, and we are inclusive of all ages, races, religions etc. Whether you're a polyglot, a beginner just starting with Duolingo Spanish, or you just want to come and socialise, you will be welcomed to our community of language learners and international friends.
**🙌 What to Expect:**
* **Language Practice:** Whether you’re fluent in Spanish, Italian, English, Arabic, Russian, Mandarin, or any other language, our hosts will help you connect with people who match your language interests.
* **Friendly Hosts:** Our hosts will greet you at the entrance, give you a label where you can write the language(s) you speak and the ones you’d like to learn or practice.
* **Inclusive Atmosphere:** We welcome all languages and levels, and make sure everyone feels comfortable—especially if you're coming alone! It’s a relaxed environment perfect for making new friends and practising languages at your own pace.
* **Socialising:** Coming alone or with friends, this is a great opportunity to meet new people in the city. Unlike some other meetup ‘groups’, we do not fill our events with fake members, and you can check how many people attend each week via our [Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/babblelondon).
**👋 How does it work?**
* **Arrive!** No need to register, just come to our event any time between 7-9pm and our event host will welcome you. They will have an orange lanyard and will be sitting next to our sign.
* **Write your ‘Language Label’.** Here you can write your name, the languages you are learning, and the languages you can help others with.
* **Pay.** Our £1 event fee pays for our lovely event hosts and keeps the event going. Card only please.
* **Get talking!** With the help of our host you will be able to find other people attending the event with compatible language interests - we are all very friendly and the majority of our attendees come alone, so there’s no need to worry about getting involved!
**📌 Where are we?**
We’re normally located in the downstairs room of The Penderel's Oak Pub, 283-288 High Holborn, London WC1V 7HP [https://g.co/kgs/57H1Wbr](https://g.co/kgs/57H1Wbr)
However, always check the location on this meetup event and in our [WhatsApp Group](https://languagexchanges.com/whatsapp) just in case there is a change.

We also have many more participants who join through other platforms.

Art Appreciation - The Bauhaus movement
This coming week we'll be looking at the **Bauhaus** movement of art and design which played such an important role in twentieth century European art.
Come and learn with us in a relaxed and friendly environment.
All welcome.
*If you come after 18.45 ring the doorbell*
Discuss & Social 🍷 Should the man always pay? (and other "rules")
*"I never do 50/50 on a date!", "High value women should never initiate!", "The man must be taller!"* \- we constantly hear about dating rules and etiquette\, typically related to how each gender should behave during the first date/s and what failing to do so means\. But where do these rules come from? Are they universal across cultures and time? And do they really help?
We'll discuss...
1\. What are the top "dating rules" we heard of regarding how men and women *should* behave?
2\. As gender roles evolve\, do people's attitudes to dating rules reveal their beliefs about such roles?
3\. Can and should gender roles change\, or should they be permanent?
*Join us for a relaxed group conversation where we explore the real life, the grey areas, and how our different cultures and backgrounds shape our views about key topics.* *Expect real talk, no judgment, and a chance to hear how others see it.*
**\*Come for the discussion, stay for the friendships. Our weekly discussion series brings together thoughtful people for honest conversations on relationships, life, and society—with warm social vibes before and after.\***
**WHAT TO EXPECT:**
* Good vibes only: we chat big topics in a chill, respectful way. No arguing - just open-minded exchange.
* We warm up with casual socializing (come solo or with friends!)
* The topic starts around 7:45/8pm, wraps around 9:30.
* 🍕 There's pizza, drinks, milkshakes and snacks available at the bar (incl plant-based options)
* And most people stay until late for drinks and mingling!
**DISCUSSION FORMAT:**
**Our group conversations are open and flexible - there is a very soft guided flow to ensure we focus on the main questions, and to ensure that everyone gets a balanced opportunity to speak. Here's a typically structure, but we adjust on the day depending on the turnout:**
\- Introductions and thoughts *(\~5 mins).*
\- Group breakouts per question *(\~20 mins x 3).*
\- Final round of opinions *(\~10 mins)*.
\- Mix and mingle\, make new friends\, get drinks etc *(\~until late)*
**EVENT ETIQUETTE (Rules & expectations)**
\- Debate the topic\, not the participants \- no personal attacks\!
\- No phones\, no interrupting\, no bystanding
\- Always follow the moderator/host instructions and guidelines

Będzie trochę refleksji, trochę teorii, inspirujące wystąpienia i przestrzeń do własnych odkryć. Wyjdziesz z czymś więcej niż tylko dobrymi mowami -z nową perspektywą na siebie.

Lecture—Afghanistan: Two Decades of War and Its Legacy
Jon Lee Anderson has documented Afghanistan’s recent history like few others, from the late 1980s mujahideen resistance to the post 9/11 intervention and the Taliban’s return in 2021. His new book, *To Lose a War*, brings together almost twenty-five years of reporting, combining earlier dispatches with new material to present a clear, chronological account of how the conflict unfolded and why it ended in collapse.
He is joined by Christina Lamb, Chief Foreign Correspondent at *The Sunday Times*, whose long-standing reporting across Afghanistan and Pakistan provides essential regional insight, and Saad Mohseni, co-founder and chairman of the Moby Group, Afghanistan’s largest media organisation.
Together, the panel will examine the early expectations of 2001, the misjudgements and strategic shifts that shaped the war, and the legacy now confronting Afghans and Western policymakers. They will also consider the regional implications of Taliban rule, the future of media and civil society, and what meaningful international engagement with Afghanistan might look like.
**Jon Lee Anderson** has been a staff writer at *The New Yorker* since 1998 and is one of the leading chroniclers of war and political transition. He has reported from conflict zones across the world, including Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq, Libya, Angola, Somalia and Lebanon, and has also produced extensive work from Latin America, including profiles of figures such as Augusto Pinochet, Fidel Castro, Hugo Chávez and Gabriel García Márquez.
His books include *To Lose a War: The Fall and Rise of the Taliban*, *Che Guevara: A Revolutionary Life*, *Guerrillas*, *The Fall of Baghdad*, and *The Lion’s Grave: Dispatches from Afghanistan*. He has received numerous international reporting awards, including the Maria Moors Cabot Prize, and has been writing from the field since beginning his career in Peru in 1979.
**Christina Lamb** is Chief Foreign Correspondent at *The Sunday Times* and one of the UK’s most acclaimed international reporters. She has covered conflicts across the world for more than three decades, earning sixteen major awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Editors and Foreign Correspondent of the Year Award six times. She was appointed OBE in 2013.
She is the author of ten books, among them the global bestseller *I Am Malala* (with Malala Yousafzai), *What War Does to Women*, *Our Bodies, Their Battlefield*, *Farewell Kabul*, and *The Africa House.*
**Saad Mohseni** is the co-founder and chairman of the Moby Group, Afghanistan’s largest independent media organisation and a major regional broadcaster. Since 2003, he has been central to building Afghanistan’s modern media sector, creating new platforms for news, public debate and entertainment after the fall of the Taliban.
He is the author of *Radio Free Afghanistan: A Twenty-Year Odyssey for an Independent Voice in Kabul*, which charts the effort to establish a free press in Afghanistan and the struggle to sustain it following the Taliban’s return to power in 2021.

Energizing Walk for Busy People!
Join our weekly walking meetup to have fun, maintain a healthy lifestyle, meet new people, and enjoy the weather! We meet Saturdays at 10am, halfway between the Reston *Container Store* and *Not Your Average Joes* (by the metal benches), leaving no later than 10:05.
Every week, rain or shine, we start by walking along the Green Trail to reach Lake Anne Community Center. Once there, we pause for water/bio (often staying a few minutes extra from April-November, due to the local Farmer's Market), and then we circle Lake Anne and head back to our starting point. It's roughly 3-4 miles and takes about an hour and a half.
Afterwards, some members will often head to *Not Your Average Joes* or another local restaurant for a quick drink/meal before tackling the day.
This event is open to all ages and fitness levels. Dogs are welcome, and we recommend dressing for the weather (umbrella, water, snow shoes, hat, etc.) since we'll walk rain or shine. Also, feel free to bring a friend!
By signing up, you accept and assume all risks and responsibilities with this activity, and nobody will be held liable.
African American Artists & Performers in the Nordic Countries/Language Practice
In recognition of Black History Month, the Nordic Culture and Language Exchange Meetup group will explore some of the African American artists, actors, singers, and musicians who lived, worked, and performed in the Nordic countries during the 20th century, particularly in the 1930s-1960s. Please join us to learn about performers like soprano Anne Wiggins Brown, who was the first Bess in George Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess” on Broadway and who later moved to Norway and had a career there (including being a voice teacher for Liv Ulmann) and Earle Hyman, who performed in many of Shakespeare’s plays in Norway (in Norwegian!). Many African American jazz musicians performed and made their homes in Denmark (some are buried in Copenhagen) such as trumpet player Thad Jones, drummer Ed Thigpen, pianist Kenny Drew, and saxophonist Dexter Jordan. Ella Fitzgerald bought a home in Denmark, performed many concerts there, and was reported to have married her producer, a Norwegian. Artist William H. Johnson spent much of the 1930s in Scandinavia- over a thousand of his paintings are in the collection at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
During the second hour, we will split up into smaller groups to practice Norwegian, Danish, Swedish, Finnish and Icelandic.
BreadBreakers Community Dinner: Dialogue Over Divisions
**In a time of division and isolation, come be part of the community that's rebuilding the town square, one table at a time.**
In BreadBreakers, we use the common space of the dining table to have conversations where neighbors can **hear, be heard, and know one another.** If you're hungry for good discourse and deeper community, join us for a Community Dinner in Reston and help blaze the trail to a healthier, more connected society and democracy.
Here’s how it works: For just two hours, multiple tables of people set aside the need to "win" and instead focus on sharing, listening, and connecting. Guided by experienced table hosts, we'll tell our stories, try to understand each other, and practice being in community with those with different views or backgrounds.
**At this dinner, participants will get to choose between three different topics, including some current events.** Topics range from the political, to the spiritual, to the philosophical, to the off-the-wall - but no matter which table you choose to sit at, you can be sure it'll be like no dinner conversation you've had before! You can also **suggest a topic** by emailing us at BreadBreakersInfo@gmail.com.
Food will be provided for free. For those who wish to provide a donation to help fund BreadBreakers, you can [give here](https://pushpay.com/g/restorationrestonumc?fnd=pO6G-N7oO7FH7Mp1u-x6mA&fndv=Lock&r=No&lang=en&src=pcgl) or at the event.
We'll have vegetarian and gluten-free options available. If you have any additional dietary restrictions (Celiac Disease, vegan, etc.) please let us know at BreadBreakersInfo@gmail.com so that we can implement the appropriate food handling procedures.
**Join us, invite a friend, and be a part of the movement to mend our fractured society and normalize a better way of talking with one another.**
BreadBreakers, an initiative by [Restoration United Methodist Church](https://restorationreston.org/breadbreakers) in Reston, VA, is a religiously inclusive community. All faiths and all stripes are welcomed. Our leadership, volunteer team, and community include people who attend Restoration and people who don't.
