Shut Up & Write!โข Copenhagen
Join us for an hour of writing! Weโve discovered that itโs strikingly helpful to write with other writers. See if itโs true for you at our Copenhagen Shut Up & Write! sessions.
Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, rรฉsumรฉ, melody, poem, or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done.
SCHEDULE:
- 15 minutes of hellos and getting settled; maybe some quick intros.
- Then, the timer starts! : writing for 1 hour.
- After the hour is up... chat / take off / keep writing, if you're on a roll.
OPTIONAL SOCIALIZING happens once the hour of writing is complete. Writing can be very solitary... connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing.
It's best to be on time, but BEING LATE IS ALSO OKAY: just show up and get settled, then check in with us after the session. (Weโll be the ones with the small Shut Up & Write! sign.) If you were on time, please be willing to make room for the friendly latecomer.
What Should I Bring?
Whatever you need to be able to write!
Bring earbuds/earplugs if you want to block the cafeโs overhead music or the occasional conversation by other patrons.
Natural Candle-Making with Pure Beeswax
Join a calming and creative workshop where we work with pure, natural beeswax. Over 2.5โ3 hours, participants will make several types of candles โ free-standing rolled candles, hand-dipped tapers, and poured tealights. Along the way, youโll learn about the unique properties of beeswax and its fascinating origin in the beehive.
All materials are included.

The food is vegan and made from donated leftover veggies from a local greengrocery.
The place has originally hosted leftwing activist groups, and many of the people joining are also involved in political groups.
If you want to join for chopping and cooking, we will be doing that from 3 to 6 pm. It is possible to join part of the time.
From 6 to 8pm we are serving food. Donation around 30 kroner. If you are helping out some hours, chopping, cooking or cleaning, you can eat for free.
From 8 to 9 - 9:30 pm we are cleaning up the place.
We hope to see you in our lovely foodclub <3

Spark Performance & The North Star of Data Catalogs
**Get ready for the next edition of the Copenhagen Data Engineering Meetup!**
On the 18th of February, we are gathering at **Unityโs** Copenhagen headquarters for an evening dedicated to fine-tuning our engines and navigating the future of open data ecosystems. Whether youโre looking to squeeze every ounce of performance out of your Spark jobs or trying to make sense of the rapidly evolving catalog landscape, this is an event you won't want to miss.
### The Lineup
We have two deep-dive sessions featuring experts from the front lines of data platform engineering:
**Spark Tuning & Best Practices: From Theory to Production-Ready Performance** *Asaf Sneh (Unity)* Moving from a Spark job that "just works" to one that is production-hardened and cost-efficient is no small feat. Asaf will take us through the journey of Spark optimization, bridging the gap between theoretical best practices and the realities of running high-performance workloads at scale within Unity.
**Graduating Class of 2026? The Current State of Apache Polaris (incubating)** *William Martin (Dremio)* As the industry moves toward open table formats, the question of "who manages the metadata" has never been more relevant. William will give us an insider look at Apache Polaris. With it being 2026, weโll explore its progress through the Apache incubator, its role in the Iceberg ecosystem, and whether itโs ready to become the "valedictorian" of your data architecture.
And, of course, a Data Engineering meetup wouldn't be complete without the chance to talk shop over a good meal. **Dinner and drinks** will be provided by our generous sponsors, **Unity** and **Dremio**.
***
### ๐ Location & Venue
The event is hosted by **Unity** at their offices in Copenhagen. *Stay tuned for specific entry instructions closer to the date.*
### Agenda
* **18:00:** People Arriving + Networking
* **18:15:** Introduction
* **18:20:** Spark Tuning & Best Practices (Asaf Sneh, Unity)

***SPEAKER BIOS & TOPICS:***
**Thomas Bolander**, PhD, is a professor at [DTU Compute](https://www.compute.dtu.dk/). His main research focus is on the modelling of social phenomena and social intelligence with the aim of creating explainable computer systems that can interact robustly and intelligently with humans and other computer systems.
He is one of the founders and main researchers within the area of *Epistemic Planning* \- providing AI agents\, e\.g\. robots\, with the ability to take the perspective of other agents into account when planning\.
He is also one of the central public communicators of AI in Denmark with several hundreds of popular science talks and media appearances. In 2019, he received the H.C. รrsted award for excellence in science communication. Thomas has also served on a number of commissions and think tanks working on the societal aspects of digitalisation and AI (including the SIRI commission, the TechDK commission, the Tiger Council, and the Governmental Expert Group on Tech Giants). In 2024, he received the DAIR "Lifetime achievement in AI" award for his research and research communication.
Topic: Intentions, attention and social intelligence. Human social intelligence relies heavily on our ability to infer what others intend to do or what their focus of attention is. Fluent human-robot interaction requires robots to have similar abilities. But how to give them that? What are the relevant paradigms and methods within AI, and what can we learn from philosophy and cognitive psychology to help us built more socially intelligent and situation-aware robots for the future?
**Sofie Grue Haumann** has been working with AI adoption since 2016, starting her career in a startup and now holding the role of AI Enablement Lead, Enterprise AI at Novo Nordisk. She has a background from CBS and her focus has always been on enhancing people-centric AI adoption, bridging the gap between innovative technology, user engagement and enablement. She is passionate about inspiring people to get started with their AI journey, regardless of their technical and has a strong track record of driving inspiring, educating and empowering initiatives that promote integration of AI.
Topic: "How Novo Nordisk is driving AI adoption across the enterprise โ and how we measure the impact."
**Ananth Gopal**, leads a data & AI team in [Nilfisk](https://www.nilfisk.com/global/professional/)'s "Autonomous & Digital Solutions" division.
He earned his PhD in computing applied to robotics, and has since worked in roles across both academia and industry. His current interests lie in applying vision-language models and reinforcement learning to control robots.
Topic: "Teaching Robots to Learn: A Live Reinforcement Learning Demo"
**Christian Zigler** is a Danish entrepreneur with a passion for leveraging technology to empower small businesses and also the founder of Tapp.
**Sebastian Stilou** is a deeptech AI software developer and architect and a leading voice in the world of proactive AI.
Topic: "Tapp is an AI-enabled POS for independent cafรฉs, kitchens and retailers."

In-Person Buddhist Meditation and Psychology Group
This group is for anyone who wants to explore Buddhist meditation in a relaxed and supportive setting. Each session includes a short meditation, a simple teaching from Buddhist psychology, and an open discussion about how these ideas show up in everyday life. While our foundation is Buddhist practice, we love weaving in wisdom from other traditions whenever it helps us grow, find peace, and support each other. Members of our community come from many different backgrounds, and you do not need to consider yourself a Buddhist to attend. All are welcome.
The session runs from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m., with doors open from 6:30 to 9:00. Come early or stay after if youโd like to enjoy some quiet reflection or casual conversation with the community.
On the first Wednesday of each month, we share a potluck meal. Bring a dish if youโd like, but the most important thing you can bring is yourself. We look forward to seeing you!
Deal or Disaster: The 5-Minute Investment Evaluation System
This training is designed for real estate agents who want to learn how to play the Agent Investor game. The goal of this training is to help you flip your income into ownership.
โโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโ
**Investors move fast. Most agents donโt.**
If you canโt evaluate a deal quickly and confidently, you lose credibilityโand the opportunity disappears.
Deal or Disaster teaches a simple, repeatable framework to determine in minutes whether a deal prints money or burns it.
In this session, youโll learn a 5-minute investment evaluation system that works across flips, rentals, BRRRRs, wholetails, and creative deals.
The goal isnโt perfectionโitโs speed, clarity, and credibility.
Weโll break down:
* How to identify the investorโs true goal before running numbers
* A fast, reliable method to estimate ARV with confidence
* How to calculate the real all-in acquisition cost
* Simple heuristics to ballpark rehab and improvement costs
* The key metrics that reveal whether a deal worksโor should be killed
Youโll also learn the most common red flags that signal bad deals, thin margins, and hidden risk, so you know when to pause or walk away.
When you can analyze deals in minutes, you earn authority, build trust, and become indispensable to investors.
Speed creates opportunityโand opportunity creates repeat business.
If you want to move from real estate generalist to trusted investment strategist, this session gives you the framework to do it.

Staunton River State Park - Sunset & Stargazing
BYO... well, lots of stuff. Our goal for this park visit is to relax. We'll perch along the banks of where the Dan and Staunton rivers meet, and enjoy our picnic dinners and sip warm drinks as we watch the sunset over the water, and then light fade into darkness. Then we'll spend some time sitting back and studying the night sky. There's so much more going on out there than we realize day to day. As a certified Dark Sky location, on a clear night, I'm told you can see the Milky Way.
Bring: Blanket/chair, warm drinks, dinner/snacks, a telescope, binoculars, astronomy apps, star maps and a sense of wonder.
Native Plant Book Club: Animal, Vegetable, Miracle
Join our partners Watermark Woods Native Plants, Loudoun County Public Library (LCPL), and Birch Tree Bookstore for the Read! Plant! Grow! Book Club, which focuses on native plants, sponsored by Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy and LCPL. At this meeting weโll discuss the book Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver. Both memoir and journalistic investigation, this book explores how the Kingsolver family took on a new challenge: to spend a year on a locally -produced diet, paying close attention to the provenance of all they consume. Concerned about the environmental, social, and physical costs of American food culture, they hoped to recover what Kingsolver considers our nationโโs lost appreciation for farms and the natural processes of food production.
You can either buy the book from Birch Tree Bookstore or contact Allison Forbes at [Allison.forbes@loudoun.gov](mailto:Allison.forbes@loudoun.gov) to borrow a copy of the book at the library. There are two ways to participate: attend the event online via the library website or [sign up to participate in person at Birch Tree Bookstore](https://www.birchtreebookstore.com/event-details/read-plant-grow-2026-02-24-18-30).

Energizing Walk for Busy People!
Join our weekly walking meetup to have fun, maintain a healthy lifestyle, meet new people, and enjoy the weather! We meet Saturdays at 10am, halfway between the Reston *Container Store* and *Not Your Average Joes* (by the metal benches), leaving no later than 10:05.
Every week, rain or shine, we start by walking along the Green Trail to reach Lake Anne Community Center. Once there, we pause for water/bio (often staying a few minutes extra from April-November, due to the local Farmer's Market), and then we circle Lake Anne and head back to our starting point. It's roughly 3-4 miles and takes about an hour and a half.
Afterwards, some members will often head to *Not Your Average Joes* or another local restaurant for a quick drink/meal before tackling the day.
This event is open to all ages and fitness levels. Dogs are welcome, and we recommend dressing for the weather (umbrella, water, snow shoes, hat, etc.) since we'll walk rain or shine. Also, feel free to bring a friend!
By signing up, you accept and assume all risks and responsibilities with this activity, and nobody will be held liable.
