January book selection: Piranesi by Susanna Clarke
This month we'll discuss Piranesi by Susanna Clarke - in the words of a Redditor, "What IS this book???"
Whatever it is, Piranesi is adored by many, winning many of 2020 and 2021's awards, including a nomination for Goodreads Choice Awards in Fantasy.
*Goodreads summary*
Piranesi’s house is no ordinary building: its rooms are infinite, its corridors endless, its walls are lined with thousands upon thousands of statues, each one different from all the others. Within the labyrinth of halls an ocean is imprisoned; waves thunder up staircases, rooms are flooded in an instant. But Piranesi is not afraid; he understands the tides as he understands the pattern of the labyrinth itself. He lives to explore the house.
There is one other person in the house—a man called The Other, who visits Piranesi twice a week and asks for help with research into A Great and Secret Knowledge. But as Piranesi explores, evidence emerges of another person, and a terrible truth begins to unravel, revealing a world beyond the one Piranesi has always known.
Madame Bovary
Finally, Madame Bovary by Flaubert.
*Madame Bovary* follows Emma, a young woman longing for a life more vibrant than the one offered by the provincial world around her.
Through her marriage, her romantic aspirations, and her growing disillusionment, Flaubert explores the tension between dreams and reality.
The novel paints a striking portrait of nineteenth-century bourgeois society and deeply questions the search for happiness and meaning.
The conversation will focus on the book.
Meaningful Afterwork: "Why Not Try Peace For A While?"
Join us for a Meaningful Afterwork exploring how we can become true practitioners of peace in our immediate environment!
**🕊️ Meaningful Afterwork: "Why Not Try Peace For A While?"**
Dearest participants,
We would love to invite you to our upcoming ***Meaningful Afterwork*** on **Friday, 23rd January**, hosted at the **Bahá’í Centre** in **Luxembourg City**.
The Theme: **"Why Not Try Peace For A While?"**
*"2nd August. Germany has declared war on Russia. — Swimming lessons in the afternoon."* This was Franz Kafka’s diary entry in 1914, the day the First World War began. It is a poignant reminder of two things: first, that our individual lives continue even amidst global upheaval; and second, that while conflict may have hindered humanity’s journey toward maturity in the past, it by no means determines our future.
Like Kafka, we do not lose our agency during dark or trying times. At this ***Meaningful Afterwork***, we want to explore the lights in our everyday lives that illumine the path to peace. How can we cultivate **tranquility and lightness within ourselves** and **radiate it into the world around us**? And even more importantly, how can we become **true practitioners of peace in our immediate environments**?
We will explore these questions through a series of short, thought-provoking excerpts from the **Bahá’í Writings**.
The Details:
* 📅 **Date:** Friday, 23rd January
* ⏰ **Time:** 6:30pm
* 📍 **Location:** 17, Allée Léopold Goebel, Luxembourg City
