SOLD OUT-Profs & Pints DC: Queer Country
SOLD OUT-Profs & Pints DC: Queer Country
**This talk has completely sold out in advance and no door tickets will be available.** [Profs and Pints DC](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“Queer Country,”** on the long, often-hidden presence of LGBTQ+ performers in country music, with Tanya Olson, lecturer in English and scholar of gender and sexuality studies at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. [Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/dc-queer-country ](https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/dc-queer-country) .] Although country music is often thought of as conservative, rural, and straight, queer artists have always been part of its story. Learn about the important role that queer artists, their ideas, and their experiences have played in country music with Tanya Olson, a cultural critic whose recent work explores the intersection of country music, identity, and tradition. She’ll talk about queer artists across generations, describing how they are hidden and what it means to stand in the circle of tradition without being seen. She’ll explore how queerness shows up in the songs, stories, and sounds of country music even when it isn’t named, and also what’s at stake when those threads are left out of the history we tell. You’ll leave with a deeper understanding of country music’s past, as well as a sharper eye for who’s been missing from the picture all along. You’ll gain an appreciation for why inclusion in country radio and the Grand Ole Opry matters, as well as an understanding of how a queer presence might strengthen, rather than threaten, country music's legacy. Olson’s latest book of poetry, *Born Backwards*, builds on the language and imagery of country music to ask who gets remembered and why. Learning from her will make for a memorable evening. (Door: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. The talk starts 30 minutes later.) Sound Bath Meditation
Sound Bath Meditation
\*\*\*Meditation in our sacred space will begin promptly at 7:15 pm. Please refrain from entering after 7:15 pm. Additionally, space is limited to the first 35 attendees. Your RSVP here does not guarantee you a spot and tickets are available first come, first served.\*\*\* Donations are appreciated, and the average donation is generally $20, but all are welcome regardless of means! A portion of all proceeds will help fund the Crystal Ashram non-profit project where the Human Activation School of Expanded Consciousness will be located. A unique musical experience called a "Sound Bath" Sound bath! What's that? According to sonic specialist Monte Hansen from Annapolis MD, "A sound bath is an immersion in sound frequency that cleans your soul." Leave your rubber ducky at home. Bring your blankey instead, for this super relaxing immersion! According to cutting-edge doctors from Harvard, some of the deepest most profound healing in the body are accomplished with sound frequency. That's old news though. A 2nd century stone relief in the Himalayan mountains shows us that Buddha and his entourage knew this before Christ walked the earth. The stone relief depicts the Buddha and his buddies playing ancient Tibetan singing bowls. A sound frequency specialist from the [Human Activation School](https://humanactivation.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d88b4fea1b0f4ceaeb58f0e82&id=d6674b4603&e=465ba11f44), will be playing several of these rare Singing Bowls, some of which are over 200 years old. A magical alchemy of 7-12 different metals rings in the past, present, and future for our relaxing enchantment. Even modern doctors are using these old metal bowls for healing, and they are not practicing Buddhists! As a matter of fact, modern Buddhists no longer use the bowls in their practice. Come experience these gifts from the past in this NON-religious practice of our present. Come be rejuvenated or just captivated by this unique musical performance. Bring your pillows, blankeys, and yoga mats and snuggle into the comfort of the tranquil sounds. Feel free to sit, lay, or even stand! ***Did You Know?*** Singing bowls invite the mind and body into a tranquil state of being in which remarkable healing can occur, events that are unexplainable from a conventional biomedical perspective” *Music and the Meditative Mind: Toward the Science of the Ineffable*[Source](https://humanactivation.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d88b4fea1b0f4ceaeb58f0e82&id=9222616fc4&e=465ba11f44) "The sound bath meditation provides a nurturing space to connect and grow spiritually. Voices of Mount Pleasant Toastmasters 2nd Tuesday Meeting (Hybrid)
Voices of Mount Pleasant Toastmasters is a new faith-based club sponsored by Mount Pleasant Baptist Church of Herndon which is open and all guests are welcome to attend. It is a pleasant fusion of Public Speaking and Leadership training with fun and fellowship. Opening with an invocation, the Club president provides guests the opportunity to introduce themselves to the group with a short elevator-speech and introduces the Toastmaster to lead the meeting with a theme. The General Evaluator and team are introduced to let attendees know the word of the day, the timing of speeches and evaluations, and the filler-words, which wil be counted. In the first segment of the meeting, there will be 1 or 2 prepared speeches from projects studied in the Toastmasters education program (Pathways). In the second segment of the meeting, willing attendees are selected to receive information or a question from the Table Topics Master to give a 1-2 minute impromptu speech. In the third segment of the meeting, the General Evaluator introduces the Evaluator for each prepared speech; reintroduces the Timer, the Ah-Counter, and the Grammarian for reports. Next, the General Evaluator gives a summarized review of the structure and leaders of the meeting. An Educational Moment will be given to explain the Toastmasters Educational Program (Pathways) as an introduction to new members and guests. The presiding officer will make announcements, ask visitors to the club for their impression of the meeting for feedback, ask for prayer concerns, and give a benediction to end the meeting. The group is mainly made up of members of the church who joined Toastmasters for the first time with the chartering of the club in September of 2023. So everyone is learning together and encouraging one another.
