"A Hero of Our Time" by Mikhail Lermontov
We've never read Lermontov in here so I'm happy we're finally righting that wrong. "A Hero of Our Time" is an example of the "superfluous man" novel found in Russian literature, in which a man, usually born to wealth and privilege, who does not fit into societal norms, disregarding social norms and typically using his privilege in the service of his own comfort. This is also considered the first example of psychological fiction in Russian literature.
¡ Say Your Prayers ¡ by Harry Michell             âźâŻonline event
This movie combines elements of *In Bruges* (2008) and *Violet & Daisy* (2011) with real religious fervor. A couple of young and not-too-bright Yorkshire lads were taken in by a priest when they were orphaned years before the movie begins. Their education has been limited to lessons of obedience, prayer, and killing. Now working as the churchâs assassins, they believe theyâre instruments of Godâs will as they target a prominent atheist philosopher. Of course, the assignment does not go as planned. Although not as weirdly sardonic as the movies mentioned above, this feature has plenty of Oddball elements, including a chorus that appears alongside the characters (although unnoticed by them) and sings traditional British folk tunes as a jaunty backdrop for the grim proceedings.

Join Blackout as we visit Hush Harbor on DC's H Street Corridor as we have a night of convo, games, and retro vibes. It's a Black-owned cocktail bar focusing on interesting drinks and inspiring connections.
If you're not familiar with Hush Harbor, the concept is that it is a phone free cocktail bar. They put your phone in one of those cases but you can still access it in a pinch. More info: https://hushharbor.co/#info
Remember when we could hold conversations without needing to refer to cellphones? House phones? Numbers on napkins? Remembering people's names? Printing out MapQuest directions? We're going back to that time.
We'll have some conversational topics and games that we'll play as we get to know each other.
Hold your spot by sending $5 via CashApp ($Blackoutbaltimore). This'll go towards the Polaroid film--yep, it's a throwback kind of night. And, yes, I'm actually bringing a Polaroid for the group shots.

A Toast To Now
Hi ladies!!
January moves fast. Between new goals and a fresh starts to old routines, itâs easy to forget to pause and recognize what weâve already done. The things that are now easy, the challenges we have forgotten, and the wins we never really celebrated.
Let's close out January slowing down, clinking glasses, and saying out loud the things weâre proud of, declaring what we want more of this year, reflecting on what has started off rocky and maybe needs a little adjustment.
Think of it as a verbal vision board, setting intention in conversation. Itâs a night of reflection, laughter, and a little vulnerability.
Dress in something that you'd wear to an event meant to celebrate you; because that is what we are doing!
Let's toast to right now and new beginnings.
\*Please update your RSVP if plans change. I will confirm with everyone RSVP'd 48 hours prior.

### Review
"A wonderful book."âSam Harris, Making Sense with Sam Harris
âa fun introduction to a number of debates⌠Mr. Kochâs book provokes questions⌠and counterarguments, but thatâs what gives it life.â âThe Wall Street Journal
âEasily the most current, thorough, and helpful exploration of consciousness available. Kochâs light, simple, yet authoritative writing style will appeal to general audiences as well as scientists and researchers. An essential, highly recommended purchase.ââLibrary Journal
âmagisterial⌠charming, sometimes beautiful, and almost always illuminatingâ
âScience Magazine
âan impressive and sometimes exuberant work, showcasing decades of [Kochâs] researchââNew Scientist
âKochâs adept use of analogies and entertaining anecdotes â complete with his own near-death experience and psychedelic drug trips â make the book a compelling and surprisingly light read.â âScience News
âundeniably compelling⌠a smoothly written must-read for anyone interested in a detailed introduction to the relationship between the brain, consciousness, and transformative experiencesâ
âArs Technica
âExpertly weaving in personal experience with science that few, if any, can speak more authoritatively about, Koch leads us on an amazing journey of consciousnessâfrom birth to death. Deeply personal and infinitely digestible, Then I Am Myself the World is a remarkable must read for anyone interested in knowing their mind.ââJudson Brewer MD, PhD, New York Timesâbestselling author of Unwinding Anxiety
âKochâs latest book brilliantly navigates the intricate landscape of our mind and our brain, offering insightful perspectives on the nature of conscious experiences, both ordinary as well as extraordinary ones.ââHartmut Neven, founder and lead of Googleâs quantum AI lab
âThen I Am Myself the World is the new record of note for the scientific understanding of consciousness. This is an elegant tableau, a travelogue of subjective experience grounded in the latest neuroscience and philosophy traversing religion, science, and a life dedicated to the biggest questions. Filled with crystalline prose, lucid explanation, and revelatory honesty, this book will continue to be read centuries from now.ââPatrick House, author of Nineteen Ways of Looking at Consciousness
âWhat would happen if a hardcore neuroscientist, with encyclopedic knowledge and four decades of experience in his field, were personally confronted with transformative mystical experiences carrying inevitable metaphysical implications? What would happen if the neuroscientist in question were open-minded, humble, but remained rigorously grounded in reason, evidence, and his hard-earned understanding of how consciousness relates to brain structures and function? What would he, the most preeminent professional of his generation, make of his extraordinary experiences? And what if, in addition, the neuroscientist was a modern renaissance man versed in physics, philosophy, the arts, the classics, and could pluck irresistibly evocative metaphors from the Western literary and artistic canon as if leisurely picking apples in early fall? This is what you will find in this treasured book, a whirlwind ride of insight after insightâso many they canât possibly be all documented in footnotesâthat will surprise and delight you from the get-go. âPrimacy goes to consciousness, not to the objective world,â he boldly states already on page two, in a prelude of things to come. âEverything else follows from there, including the realist assumption of the existence of objects, out âthere,â independent of my experiencing them.â The book embodies the ever-evolving wisdom of a man whose intellectual prowess is only matched by his intellectual honesty. And this man, in the seventh decade of his scintillatingly productive life, has a lifetime of learning to share with you.ââBernardo Kastrup, executive director, Essentia Foundation
âKochâs first book was entitled The Quest for Consciousness. And such has been Kochâs life, an adventurerâs pursuit of a distant goal, undeterred by the prevailing winds. The reader will learn where this quest has led and, like the author, will be enriched by it. Koch, one of the most accomplished scientists of our time, a mind singularly open to learning and changing, here opens his soul, revealing his vast, scintillating appreciation of nature in all its forms. It is a touching, profound book. Which is as it should be, since consciousness touches everything and is everything we touch.ââGiulio Tononi, University of Wisconsin-Madison

Moving Beyond Us Versus Them with Sister Jenna
## **Moving Beyond Us Versus Them with Sister Jenna**
**Join renowned speaker, Sister Jenna, at our new Brahma Kumaris location in Chantilly, VA for this powerful event!**
## ***Beyond sides. Beyond stories. Into connection.***
In a world increasingly shaped by polarization, uncertainty, and âUs versus Themâ thinking, many people are feeling weary, guarded, or disconnected, sometimes without realizing how deeply it has affected them. *Moving Beyond Us Versus Them* offers a timely and healing invitation to step out of division and into understanding.
In this reflective session, Sister Jenna guides us to examine how labels, opinions, and unconscious biases quietly shape our perceptions and reactions. Rather than engaging in debate or blame, this session creates space to rise above conditioned thinking and reconnect with our shared humanity, where compassion, dignity, and mutual respect naturally emerge.
This session is not about choosing sides, itâs about choosing consciousness, connection, and the courage to see one another anew.
