Literary Reading Circle: “Happy Days” by Samuel Beckett
We will read/watch this short play (30 pages; 1:17:00 video) and discuss our reactions and interpretations together. You can find an excellent film adaptation [here](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=L5vhQ4d_KMI). As for the text, I haven’t found a good online version but you might be able to obtain one.
This is an absurd play about a woman buried up to her waist in sand going about her day. To say more would spoil the pleasure of watching it. I look forward to hearing your reactions!

Coding with AI - Real talk, real code
A samozřejmě, večer zakončíme kvalitním pokecem u piva a v atmosféře bublajících dýmek.
Přijďte včas, abyste si zajistili pohodlné místo. Těšíme se na vás!

Philosophy Seminar: C. Menke’s and Nietzsche’s theories of art
Our dear friend Albert known to many of you by the famous Prague's Cafe Philo is going to give us a talk about **the theories of art** by Friedrich Nietzsche and Christoph Menke.
**Christoph Menke** is a contemporary German philosopher who thinks about art. What is art, how do we make judgments about art, how does art influence our personal life and life in society – these are the questions he treats in his book THE FORCE OF ART (“Die Kraft der Kunst”).
Christoph Menke is professor at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University of Frankfurt, his concept of art is strongly influenced by Adorno, Kant and especially by Nietzsche’s famous book THE BIRTH OF TRAGEDY (“Die Geburt der Tragödie aus dem Geiste der Musik”). In a way, you can look at his book as an actualization of **Nietzsche’s concept of art**. The main idea is that a genuine work of art always contains a tension between two poles – which can be called the force and the craft. Join our seminar to learn more about them!
You don’t need any knowledge about the above-mentioned books and philosophers to participate in our discussion. All relevant material will be presented during the meeting.
\*\*\*
Like many of our past events, the seminar will take place at the living room of our friend Justin. Everyone is welcome to join. We’ll have a bottle of wine, some flavored water, tea, and light snacks for Sunday. Please feel free to bring any drink or snack you’d like to share!
Also, we’ve got a very friendly, well-trained dog who will be happy to see all of you. The name on the buzzer is McCandless, Mainous, and Everett – take the elevator to the 5th floor and it’s the door immediately to the left.

Filozofická kavárna (Café Philo): Přemýšlet a diskutovat
Filozofování o životě a o všem ostatním pro všechny, bez vstupného a bez přihlášky:

**BreadBreakers is a community where people of all different belief systems and backgrounds can create community - and what better way to do that than reading together?**
Join us as we combine the kind, curious, and welcoming atmosphere of a BreadBreakers dinner with the thought-provoking, fun format of a book club. Here's what to expect:
* We'll be reading *Of Mice and Men*, by John Steinbeck.
* This will be a one-meeting club, so if you've ever wanted to do a book club but couldn't commit to multiple meetings, here's your opportunity!
* Snacks :)
* BreadBreakers ground rules apply - we'll lead with curiosity, converse with kindness, and strive to dig beneath the surface level.
* We'll be gathering in Meeting Room 1 at the Reston Regional Library.

**I've never attended a BreadBreakers event before - what is BreadBreakers?**
BreadBreakers is a community where neighbors from all different beliefs and backgrounds can **hear, be heard, and know one another.** Most frequently, we do this through the ancient practice of breaking bread around a common dining table.
But we're more than just a discussion group - we're a movement to heal our world's broken discourse and forge togetherness in a time of isolation and loneliness. **Through the sacred act of just "being" together, we're working to rebuild the town square, one table (or book club) at a time.**
BreadBreakers is a religiously inclusive by Restoration United Methodist Church in Reston, VA. All faiths, beliefs, and stripes are welcomed, and our leadership and community include people who attend Restoration and people who don't.
February Book Club Meetup: Doppelganger by Naomi Klein
Join us for a thought-provoking conversation as we discuss ***Doppelganger: A Trip into the Mirror World* by Naomi Klein**
Here's the summary:
What if you woke up one morning and found you’d acquired another self―a double who was almost you and yet not you at all? What if that double shared many of your preoccupations but, in a twisted, upside-down way, furthered the very causes you’d devoted your life to fighting against?
Not long ago, the celebrated activist and public intellectual Naomi Klein had just such an experience―she was confronted with a doppelganger whose views she found abhorrent but whose name and public persona were sufficiently similar to her own that many people got confused about who was who. Destabilized, she lost her bearings, until she began to understand the experience as one manifestation of a strangeness many of us have come to know but struggle to define: AI-generated text is blurring the line between genuine and spurious communication; New Age wellness entrepreneurs turned anti-vaxxers are scrambling familiar political allegiances of left and right; and liberal democracies are teetering on the edge of absurdist authoritarianism, even as the oceans rise. Under such conditions, reality itself seems to have become unmoored. Is there a cure for our moment of collective vertigo?
Naomi Klein is one of our most trenchant and influential social critics, an essential analyst of what branding, austerity, and climate profiteering have done to our societies and souls. Here she turns her gaze inward to our psychic landscapes, and outward to the possibilities for building hope amid intersecting economic, medical, and political crises. With the assistance of Sigmund Freud, Jordan Peele, Alfred Hitchcock, and bell hooks, among other accomplices, Klein uses wry humor and a keen sense of the ridiculous to face the strange doubles that haunt us―and that have come to feel as intimate and proximate as a warped reflection in the mirror.
Combining comic memoir with chilling reportage and cobweb-clearing analysis, Klein seeks to smash that mirror and chart a path beyond despair. Doppelganger What do we neglect as we polish and perfect our digital reflections? Is it possible to dispose of our doubles and overcome the pathologies of a culture of multiplication? Can we create a politics of collective care and undertake a true reckoning with historical crimes? The result is a revelatory treatment of the way many of us think and feel now―and an intellectual adventure story for our times.

**BOOK DESCRIPTION:**
***Who will inherit this new Earth?***
The last remnants of the human race left a dying Earth, desperate to find a new home among the stars. Following in the footsteps of their ancestors, they discover the greatest treasure of the past age—a world terraformed and prepared for human life.
But all is not right in this new Eden. In the long years since the planet was abandoned, the work of its architects has borne disastrous fruit. The planet is not waiting for them, pristine and unoccupied. New masters have turned it from a refuge into mankind's worst nightmare.
Now two civilizations are on a collision course, both testing the boundaries of what they will do to survive. As the fate of humanity hangs in the balance, who are the true heirs of this new Earth?
*\*Since missing one of these meetups is taking a spot away from someone else who wants to go, we'll need to have a stricter attendance policy than normal. For book discussions, 3 no-shows in a rolling 3-month period will prohibit you from attending any other book discussion for 2 months after your last no-show. In order to avoid a no-show, please update your RSVP no later than 10pm two nights before a discussion. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation! If you need to drop off because of Covid symptoms or exposure or a positive test or any other illness, there will be no penalty to no-showing or dropping late.*
March Book Club Meetup: Enshittification by Cory Doctorow
Join us for a thought-provoking conversation as we discuss ***Enshittification: Why Everything Suddenly Got Worse and What to Do About It* by Cory Doctorow**
Here's the summary:
**Explaining the process of the “enshittification” of digital platforms over time and what to do about it.**
Cory Doctorow's *Enshittification* takes a witty yet incisive look at the tech landscape, where platforms like TikTok, Facebook, and Google start off great—before they inevitably turn terrible. In this contemporary moment of digital decline, Doctorow explores how tech giants lure users in with convenience and then degrade their services over time, squeezing profit at the cost of user experience. With a mix of sharp humor and deep insight, he unveils the slow creep of "enshittification," turning the online world into a worse place, one algorithm at a time.
**Let’s meet at Caboose Commons in Fairfax to enjoy some good discussion and meet new friends.**
