Bookclub in Spandau
An afternoon bookclub, organized by our member Pooja Ghosh.
We will meet in a café in Spandau altstadt (they have good cakes :D) and talk about what we are currently reading :) and, if we've time, chat in general about books. Please also feel free to read a sample from you book if you wish.
Usually we read both fiction and non-fiction (history, philosophy, sociology, and other topics).
Bring your Kindle, your tablet, or your paper books. The discussion will be in English, but of course feel free to bring books in any language.
@ Anna Blume - A cozy book swap and chat meetup!
The "classical" bookswap is simple:
* We meet in a café and put the book(s) we brought down on the tables.
* We browse and discuss the books with one another while sipping coffee or hot chocolate, or eating cake.
* We write our names down on any books we’d like to take home (post-its and pens provided).
* At the end of the evening, negotiate any books that are contended and take a new-to-you book home!
Books/happiness shared are books/happiness multiplied! A Bookswap is 10 times better than a Book Club because you can talk about ALL the books instead of just one!
This is a great way to give your books a new home and make room for new books: that book you feel guilty for not having read even though it's been sitting on your bedside table for the last 5 years, the book you liked but didn't love, the book you loved so much you want everyone to read it, the book you somehow own three copies of, that book you absolutely hated even though everyone else loves it, and so on.
Moreover, you will meet fellow readers, get a new book or two, and several book recommendations. We’ve often had readers experience books they wouldn't normally buy and enjoy it.
GROUP EXPECTATIONS for PLEASANT SWAPPING
* Please bring a book! It's not that you bring one you take one, but do try your best to bring something.
* Books stay on the tables, open for sharing, until you are ready to leave so that everyone can have a look. We are notably not first come first serve. Please wait until you are leaving to bag the book.
* If two or more people want the only copy of a book, negotiate. Maybe one of you reads it first and then gives it to the others. Or perhaps they have found another book instead. Or leave it to fate and toss a coin. The best part: now you have found somebody whose taste you can really admire. In any case, please don't walk away with a book with several names on it without letting the others know.
These negotiations are fun and easy, so don't shy away from a book because there's already a name on it, and feel free to put your name on as many books as you find interesting. It's not that you bring one you take one; you may take as many as you can negotiate.
* Political discussions with consent: make sure the people you are talking to would like to have a political discussion with you.
* Please respect this space as first and foremost a community for connecting readers over their love of books and reading, stories, and narratives of all sorts. Please be respectful of tastes and opinions.
* If something is bothering you, please reach out to the organizers, and we'll do our best to resolve it.
* Lastly, don't expect your book back. It will find a new home. If you love it, let it go.
Major LANGUAGES (and genres) of this meetup: English, German, French, Spanish, Italian; Fiction, Non-Fiction, Serious Reading, Light Fun, “classics", Krimis, Booker winners, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Self-Help and more. You never know who can read what languages, and there's no accounting for taste.

Türkçe Kurmaca Kitap Kulübü - Pazar Buluşması
Merhabalar,
January book selection: Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel
We start this new year in Mexico!
Our first 2026 reading will be "Like Water for Chocolate" by Laura Esquivel.
**About the Book**
***Like Water for Chocolate*** is a sensuous, magical tale set in early 20th-century Mexico, where emotions simmer as intensely as the dishes prepared in the family kitchen.
Through Tita, a young woman bound by tradition, yet full of passion, Laura Esquivel blends romance, food, and magical realism to explore love, family expectations, and personal freedom.
Told through monthly recipes, the novel invites us into a world where cooking becomes an act of resistance, emotion, and connection.
**About the Author**
Laura Esquivel is a Mexican novelist, screenwriter, and former politician. *Like Water for Chocolate* is her internationally acclaimed debut novel that brought her worldwide recognition.
**Location of the Event**
To be announced
**Event contribution alert**
The event might require a small participation fee (3-5 euros) or the purchase of something to eat or drink in case we are hosted by a coffee shop. I will make sure to communicate that in advance.
Conflict to Connection: A Queer Zine workshop
**Conflict to Connection: A Queer Zine workshop**
with Sará Král
event for **LGBTQIA+**
**[Free event with registration](https://wearevillage.org/en/shop/zine-workshop/w03-2026)**
To conclude the Conflict & Resilience project, we invite all participants from Radical Empathy — Queer Storytelling, the working group Conflicts as Opportunities, and anyone interested to come together and create a conflictual zine.
This workshop has a hands-on, collective, and experimental character. Queer lives are shaped by tension – between belonging and exclusion, visibility and erasure, intimacy and distance. Instead of smoothing over these contradictions, we want to make them visible and work with their energy. Conflicts become starting points for creativity, connection, and shared learning.
Together, we’ll create a zine that captures our experiences, questions, and frictions. Words, texts, fragments, collages, drawings, or notes – everything can find its place in this collective process. We’ll exchange ideas, tell stories, and weave individual voices into a shared expression. It’s going to be a collective zine – each participant will make a certain number of pages with their contribution. Zine-making is more than an artistic practice – it’s an act of self-empowerment and community building. By sharing our stories, we create space for diversity, contradiction, and mutual inspiration.
Open to all ages and backgrounds – whether you’re making a zine for the first time or already have experience. Bring your ideas, your questions, and your conflicts – and let’s turn them into something new, together. Participants are invited to prepare a small contribution for the zine — such as a conflict story, poem or crossword — and bring any visual materials (magazines, stickers, cut-outs, photos) to support it
**General information**
**Participant**: this workshop series is open to LGBTQIA+ people.
**Language**: Depending on the group’s needs, sessions will be held in German and/or English.
**Cost**: Free of charge, registration required.
🔵

February Book Club Meetup: Doppelganger by Naomi Klein
Join us for a thought-provoking conversation as we discuss ***Doppelganger: A Trip into the Mirror World* by Naomi Klein**
Here's the summary:
What if you woke up one morning and found you’d acquired another self―a double who was almost you and yet not you at all? What if that double shared many of your preoccupations but, in a twisted, upside-down way, furthered the very causes you’d devoted your life to fighting against?
Not long ago, the celebrated activist and public intellectual Naomi Klein had just such an experience―she was confronted with a doppelganger whose views she found abhorrent but whose name and public persona were sufficiently similar to her own that many people got confused about who was who. Destabilized, she lost her bearings, until she began to understand the experience as one manifestation of a strangeness many of us have come to know but struggle to define: AI-generated text is blurring the line between genuine and spurious communication; New Age wellness entrepreneurs turned anti-vaxxers are scrambling familiar political allegiances of left and right; and liberal democracies are teetering on the edge of absurdist authoritarianism, even as the oceans rise. Under such conditions, reality itself seems to have become unmoored. Is there a cure for our moment of collective vertigo?
Naomi Klein is one of our most trenchant and influential social critics, an essential analyst of what branding, austerity, and climate profiteering have done to our societies and souls. Here she turns her gaze inward to our psychic landscapes, and outward to the possibilities for building hope amid intersecting economic, medical, and political crises. With the assistance of Sigmund Freud, Jordan Peele, Alfred Hitchcock, and bell hooks, among other accomplices, Klein uses wry humor and a keen sense of the ridiculous to face the strange doubles that haunt us―and that have come to feel as intimate and proximate as a warped reflection in the mirror.
Combining comic memoir with chilling reportage and cobweb-clearing analysis, Klein seeks to smash that mirror and chart a path beyond despair. Doppelganger What do we neglect as we polish and perfect our digital reflections? Is it possible to dispose of our doubles and overcome the pathologies of a culture of multiplication? Can we create a politics of collective care and undertake a true reckoning with historical crimes? The result is a revelatory treatment of the way many of us think and feel now―and an intellectual adventure story for our times.
**Let’s meet at Caboose Commons in Fairfax to enjoy some good discussion and meet new friends.**
